Crusty Eye, closed shut - UPDATE

I've got a chick with both eyes sealed shut. Yesterday I swabbed them with warm water and was able to get one open so she could eat and drink. I put a thin layer of petroleum jelly on them. I also started her on tylan 50 This morning they are sealed shut again. So I tried again to get them open with no luck. I have been giving her water through a dropper but can't get her to eat. She has no visible discharge from nose or mouth or coughing sneezing. I'm going to try the neosporin today. I hope she makes it.

Neosporin does the trick. HOWEVER, be sure it is the NEOSPORIN WITHOUT PAIN RELIEF...just plain Neosporin 2 times each day for 3 or 4 days should do it. Continue to clean the eye first. Then treat it. Keep us posted ! Don't give up!

She died just a bit ago sadly! I was force feeding water with electrolytes but it wasn't enough. I've got all chicks on antibiotics now just in case.

Does anyone have an update on treating your chicken for the dried and crusted eye lids? I have a silkie that I’ve been treating with no success.

Did any of your treatment methods work? I have a silkie with crusted shut eyes.

This thread is originally from 2012 and last post was 2017, it's very unlikely the posters will respond to you.

Can you please start your own thread, you will get better suggestions just for your hen.

The photo below shows how to start a new thread.

Include clear well-lit photos of your Silkie, list the symptoms she has, her age, along with methods of treatment(s) you have tried and duration.
Also make note of anything you have encountered previously - is she new to you, have you ever had respiratory infection within your flock. Does she have lice or mites, etc.

The eyes crusted shut could be for a couple of reasons but I would have been using Terramycin, which is meant for eyes, two or three times a day after using a warm wash rag to try to get the eye uncrusted and open, then rinse with a saline rinse, then put the Terramycin in both eyes. Unless you're in CA, you can get Terramycin in a drugstore over the counter (OTC).

Are there no other symptoms? It could be a sinus infection or some other type of infection/respiratory, etc. for which your silkie might need antibiotics.

I would also post this as a fresh post in this forum.
