Crusty Growth on Comb/Face

Can anyone tell me what this is on my pullet's comb and face? The black, crusty growth appeared first on her comb several days ago, and I thought it was a bad scratch that had scabbed over, but now she's got a similar smaller growth on the side of her beak. The other three hens in our flock are fine. The pullet in the photos is acting perfectly normally otherwise -- happy, energetic, and eating, drinking and pooping normally.

Are you plagued by mosquitoes? It could be avian pox, carried by mosquitoes. Try Blu-kote on the lesions.

Yep, that looks like it. Do you know if you can generally get Blu-kote at feed stores, or do I need to get it from a vet?

Also, I'm doing some research now, but is this fatal, or is it more like chicken pox in humans? I hope I don't lose this girl!

You can buy Blu-kote or Blue Lotion (gentian violet is the main ingredient) at most feed stores.

No, avian pox isn't caused by the human herpes virus. It's completely different. It usually isn't fatal, and the chicken will recover. It's spread by mosquitoes. There are two kinds, wet and dry. The wet kind can be serious, while the dry pox is not generally so bad. The Blu-kote will help it heal.

it definitely is some kind of fowl pox my chickens are going though the same thing i recommend using colloidal silver.you can get the small bottle if it is on just one of your chickens->
