Cry Baby Chick Won't Stop Crying

The only time my chicks panic is when one wanders up on top and can't figure out where everyone went. Like this.

Once the chick is set back on the floor of the brooder, they can see the other chicks under the pad.

Oh, where do they sell them, would they have them at Fleet Farm? I know my work doesn't carry any. Or would I have to have it shipped to my house?

Also do you thinking adding more chicks is necessary or should having just 2 be alright? They will be 1 week old around Tuesday/Wednesday so if I need more chicks I would need to get them this week so they are not too much younger than they are. Keeping in mind Whinny still has wry neck.

All you need is a heating pad that won't automatically shut off, a frame that can be adjusted as the chicks grow, and something to keep the poo off the pad.
This is the pad I use. Cheap and effective. A piece of old wire fencing for the frame can be bent into a basic arch. Smoosh to sides in, and it gets taller. Push the top down and it gets lower. A puppy pad keeps the poo off. Takes less than a minute to have it all up and running, and it's simple.

They sell them on amazon, at walmart, CVS etc. The most common one is the Sunbeam XPress Heat but the cheaper Sunbeam will work, the most important part is that it either doesn't have auto shut off feature or you can turn that off.

Here is the article and thread on it.

There's been many adaptations since the original so I'd recommend at least looking through the pictures in the thread even if you don't want to read all the posts, just the pictures are helpful for ideas. And the people in the thread are all really nice and can answer any questions.

I found it and used it for my first chicks (fall 2015) and it worked out great. I had just bought a red heat bulb but then I found the thread so used that instead and I'm glad.

The chicks were so quiet

Also be sure there's no pasty butt involved.
I had one crying a lot and that was the problem. She cried for a whole day that I brought her home then I discovered it but it was too late. Even after cleaning her up she died the next day. I figured she had it when I bought her. My next batch got thoroughly inspected before leaving the store.

Yeah, I keep their butt's clean. No full on pasty butt, just poo sticking to the feathers sometimes. I take a wet little q-tip and wash up their butt's after they go. They still like to try and pick at each other's vents now and again though. Whinny is more likely to do so since her head is at that level most of the time.
