Crying... everything is dead. UPDATE POST #54

Well, I have a few suspects. I am certainly not going to go all vigilanty style accusing dogs. I have no clue what dog did this. I can't accuse anyone of anything! Other than be disgusted and sad and out hundreds of dollars, there is nothing I can do. I was going to go warn neighbours face to face that something did this, that is was probably a dog and that I am going to catch it or kill anything that comes near by coop. This is the third or fourth time I have had a dog attack and it is getting tiring. What if they graduate to my cats? Or my kids? So, your dog gets loose and I find it in my yard? I will catch it and turn it over to animal control. I control my dogs. Others can do the same.

There is one dog in particular that was roaming the streets today. He has chased my son three times, come after our dogs, attacked the coop once before while I was outside in the yard (coop was closed up so chickens were safe) and also killed a cat in front of my kids. I will start with them. I guess I am very very tired of being nice and polite and accepting that someone can't keep their dogs in their yard and they go terrorizing everything in the area.

So right now my plan is to build a second fence. Lock the fence and coop with padlocks. Electrify the outer fence. Set up either a camera or a trap around the coop. Keep a gun at the ready (but of course it never happens when we are home).

But I can warn the neighbours. And start calling animal control every single time I see a dog running loose.

This is so sad and horrible, I'm sorry to hear it.

Can you figure out anything from the bite mark? A photo with a tape measure in the shot could help at least to prove that it is a dog.

only cats, dogs, and humans kill just for fun and like and 90% of cats if they do attack a chicken will only attack a small one. dogs will attack each one till it stops moving.

I thought foxes also kill that way without eating?

Cold Fact. That someone elses animals killed your livestock IS NOT YOUR FAULT! Identify the dogs, call the police today to file a complaint, then take the offending owners to small claims court, estimate the value of each to include the potential egg loss expenses. STAND YOUR GROUND. In our county we have the right to protect our livestock from predators (20 gauge, or 22's are fine)

no they may kill 2 or 3....but thats when feeding young

I have seen both mink and weasels kill many birds at once and eat almost nothing as well as Great Horned owls wiping out our duck flock in 1 night. I also vote that it was a dog. It or they will be back if you still have chickens. Traps , Game camera's, are the only way to catch the culprits. So Sorry about your chickens.

I'm so sorry.

Sorry for your loss. I would not go to anyone.Instead I would wait for the dog(s) to return and kill them. If you go people will keep their dogs in,and me, I would want the dogs to come back. You don't have proof to make a report and get compensated.

Get a good lock for the next batch of birds you get.
