Crying... everything is dead. UPDATE POST #54

if the person turns himself in, his reward should be getting his tongue ripped out & a bullet in hius hind end

It might be possible that the hole being cut in the fence has nothing to do with what happened to your chickens other than it allowed a dog or predator to get through. However, it might be possible that a youngster cut a hole in your fence to get into your coop because he likes your chickens and wanted to visit with them or take eggs. But, left the coop door unlatched, unintentionally. Then, dogs or another predator came in and did the rest.

I agree with setting up cameras, that's for sure!

Had that same argument here with a judge and the neighbor's cattle coming onto my property and destroying what amounted to over $1000 in various landscaping plants. Judge said that it was my responsibility to keep the cows out. I reminded him that it was the cattle owner's responsibility to keep track of his cattle and not my job to keep his cows in his pasture per state law. I cannot remember the exact chapter and title to the law but he dug it up, fined the cattle owner for the plants, a new fence, and a little extra for all the work I had put into the yard.

Now, if it had been my fence, then it would have been my problem since I would have been the owner of the fence. In this case, it was his fence, his cattle, and his problem. I still have livestock owner's rights of protection that says if an animal of any kind comes in and kills my livestock, I can return the favor.

Sounds like that judge just really didn't want to fine a cattleman for having his cows mess up your pretty yard. Don't take this wrong, I'm posting this from the judge's probable point of view, not my own. In my view, it matters not a bit what it was the cattle messed up. They destroyed property and you did deserve to be reimbursed for whatever it was.

I guess that is possible, although all the kids should have been in school and those not in school who were wandering around were not doing it with good intentions.

My birds refuse to come down off the roost. They are really nervous in the coop right now, which to me, means the attack occurred inside the coop. My husband and I think someone cut the hole to let their dog in. All the babies were killed in the run, a hen was killed while laying an egg in the nesting box, and then the rest were killed in a path trying to escape the coop towards the woods. One hen was killed near the driveway.

This is just so heartbraking to read. I'm so sorry this happened. This makes me want to padlock my coop. I have bumber stickers on my truck from BYC store and now I might want to remove them so I'm not advertising that I have chickens.

So sad for you- understand exactly, moved our tractor on Wednesday morning and didn't realise the grass wasn't totally level! Went to town and came home to the yard strewn with my 7 week old pullet bodies! 24 gone- our labby had a field day! We bought 100 straight run and ended up with about 60 hens- as luck would have it- we had just split the girls and boys that morning. My son (9) was devestated and is still having nightmares about "his" babies who are dead. Best of all they were mostly our favourites! Some we had already singled out for breeding! I'm so sorry for your loss- you are not alone!
