Had that same argument here with a judge and the neighbor's cattle coming onto my property and destroying what amounted to over $1000 in various landscaping plants. Judge said that it was my responsibility to keep the cows out. I reminded him that it was the cattle owner's responsibility to keep track of his cattle and not my job to keep his cows in his pasture per state law. I cannot remember the exact chapter and title to the law but he dug it up, fined the cattle owner for the plants, a new fence, and a little extra for all the work I had put into the yard.
Now, if it had been my fence, then it would have been my problem since I would have been the owner of the fence. In this case, it was his fence, his cattle, and his problem. I still have livestock owner's rights of protection that says if an animal of any kind comes in and kills my livestock, I can return the favor.
Sounds like that judge just really didn't want to fine a cattleman for having his cows mess up your pretty yard. Don't take this wrong, I'm posting this from the judge's probable point of view, not my own. In my view, it matters not a bit what it was the cattle messed up. They destroyed property and you did deserve to be reimbursed for whatever it was.
