Keep some bear mace handy for the dog chasing your son.It might slow it down enough for you to kill it.Any dog that chases my kids will get a bat to the head.Lol,take turns with a loved one being the *posted guard* on the property...with gun in hand.Hope you have one with a scope.

Sorry to hear about your loss and the trauma for you and your family. How wonderful that 3 escaped.

Legally around here, as awful as it may seem, the land owner is fully responsible for fencing other animals off his/her own property. Your idea about establishing a fenced area where stray dogs cannot get to your chickens is really the best solution. It may not fly in court, unfortunately, to try to get some reimbursment even if you had solid proof of exactly which dog was the culprit. A lot depends on local ordinances, courts, lawyers etc.

Regarding going to neighbors, I do agree than no one would claim responsibility, and neighbors may not even know where their dogs travel.

All that said, it sounds like there is a problem dog in you neighborhood. Not sure where you live, but perhaps you could call your local 'animal control' office to have the dog that chased your children and killed a cat picked up and removed. Tell them the facts and suggest that it is a public nuisance, perhaps even a public health/safety threat.

This thread didn't mention the idea of feral dogs either. Occasionally there are dogs around that really don't belong to anyone, they have been abandoned.

Your solid fencing around your A-frame will probably be the best and cheapest defense in the end.

ya foxes will wipe out chickens too its not really just dogs its all animals in the dog family.

if that dogs killing cats and pets and chasing kids it needs to get shot thats to dangerous

SO I have an update.

I went out this morning after my run with the dogs to check on my three survivors. They won't come down out of the roost but that is to be expected. As I was turning I noticed a giant hole in the fencing in the run. Which means something ripped through the fence to kill them all. Although that doesn't explain how the door was opened.

SO I go to inspect the fence and realize that it is quite large (large enough for a small person or big dog to get through. And that it wasn't ripped apart but a hole was cut out of it. I found the piece cut out of it on the ground outside of the coop.

Do raccoons cut holes out of fencing? Or was it a kid?

Definitely a person. That's confirmation you need to get a game camera up. This is trespassing, malicious behavior, and has cost you lives. I'd be calling the cops now, because you will need this documentation in the future.

Does sound fishy! They probably want make the effort to come back for he others, but once you rebuild your flock some I'd set up a nature came.. sounds too weird with the whole cut out for me? you have any neighbors close that dont like you having chickens?
