CSU - Chicken State University- Large Fowl SOP

We can do anything we want, as far as discussing breeds. In order to distinguish this thread from the 100 others it must be different. There are dozens and dozens of threads already on BYC.

But my goal here at CSU is to be concise and to stay on point, keep the thread focused and to do a good job on each breed as it is presented. The topic at hand is the Buckeye breed. We try to give adequate time, but then we move on. Here's to hoping everyone understands the intent of the University thread. Focus hard and intelligently, go in depth, pound away on a particular breed, then close the unit, edit out the chit chat and then move on.

Buckeyes. Lets stay on them for another day, or if interest persists, perhaps another day. Then, we'll wrap it up and move. That's how we roll.

Before we go off of buckeyes, could people comment please? Please be critical. All 3 pictures were taken within 10 minutes of each other. I understand that judging from pictures is difficult, but this is what I have and I do not want to miss this opportunity to better my flock. Thanks for your time and your comments.

1mutt! I will add my comments. Please be aware that I am a novice. If I do not say something specific that you are looking for, please ask.

Rooster 1(Johnny) 1 Year old, 7.5 lbs

This bird has a good bar of slate, good eye color(eye color has been an issue for me). His beak while well shaped is very dark. I think his comb is a bit big. He appears to have good breats and a broad back. He is a gentleman with hens(and that includes this old one!) He is the off spring of two of my birds.

Rooster 2(Clyde) 1 year old 6.5 lbs
This bird I purchased as he was not related to any of mine, hoping to get some new blood into my flock. While he has done this I have issues with his size. At 6.5 lbs he seems puny and I eat my cull so I do want meat on his bones. I think he is well shaped with a broad back(for his size)I think he could be a bit longer in the back. He does have a small bar of slate on his back, not much though. He does have black ticking(?) in his hackles. When I got him his legs were white, but they have yellowed up some.

Rooster 3 3 years old( Hank) 8 lbs

This is the first rooster I bought. He is in the mixed flock because I did not intend to breed him as he is related to almost every chicken I have. He is redder than most buckeyes I have seen. He is very broad across his back and his chest. He produced excellent roasters. He has a good bar of slate, nice shanks(or are they to short?). He has developed some white in his tail with age. He has good length of back, though he doesn't have the downward grade as wanted.

Please ask specific questions if you have them. As a novice my comments go to the most obvious observations and I learn more I realize that there is much more to look for. Again please comment, or ask me questions. Thanks, Ginny

Without looking in the SOP, the only longer tailed breed in the American class that comes to mind is the Lamona.

Also without looking at the standard, I would add those Dominiques.

Ill post some pictures of Lamonas when I get home, as far as I know there are only 3-4 people with them, and they are still very much a work in progress.
So, have we run low on Buckeye class material?

If so, we can begin to look forward to the next unit.

There are a couple of American Class breeds left, but the Hollands and Lamona are so rare that participation might be hard to come by. The English, Continental and Mediterranean classes also have extremely rare breeds, but many popular breeds that would hold a lot of interest.

So, let's see those Buckeyes and let's ask those questions and make those comments.

These birds are in breeding pens, so they arent in the best condition.

Im still lookin for the male pics that I have.

Since it is in the acceptance process I wouldn't mind seeing pictures of some.....but Fred is running this thread, so it is up to him. I have read the proposed Standard, but I need to see some good examples at some point. If not here PM them to me.

Walt, since I'm a curious type, I can't help but wonder what other breeds/varieties are in the acceptance process? And how close are these said breeds and varieties if you can share that info?

Iowa Blue, Cream Legbar, (both 5 years out) Appenzeller Spitzhauben (?) Ko Shamo bantam (qual meet in 2014), Black Serama and Black and white Marans (2013 qualifying meet).
