Cubalaya Spurless Genetics

like cubalayas are spurless. like many strains are inbred and small due to show people trying to get that perfect feather. like even after grading and producing good birds, the faults come back after a few generations. if you have specific questions i would be happy to try and answer them.

I have been looking at which Purebreed I want to work with in the coming years after University and I was looking at Dark Cornish, Barnevelders, Indio Gigantes or Cubalayas. I didn't like how small Cubalayas are, is it a result of inbreeding depression?

Cocks are supposed to be 6 lbs and hens 4 lbs. Most of mine are 5+ cocks with an occasional 6 pounder. Hens are 3+ with a few reaching 4 lbs at 3 years. They were smaller when i started with them. My best success has been with white cubalayas.

What about their height and confirmation.

So you are working on an improvement program for them?

Yes. Been working on improving them for quite a few years now. The standard black cubalayas were pretty much extinct but i found some remakes and worked on them about 10 years. Sold my black flock to a guy that shows this year. The wheatons or bb reds that i started with were from sandhill preservation as were my whites, red pyles, and brown reds. Smallish and tails too high. I ended up grading asil and thai into the bb reds with much improvement for a few generations but faults kept coming back so i got rid of that color. The whites are kind of a strange story as i only kept a couple of hens and an almost white pyle hen. I hatched a white sport from my brown reds that was an exceptional cock and bred him to all 3 hens, keeping the best pullets and breeding back to him year after year. He finally died and i had no backup so i used an outcross from the same guy that i got the blacks from. They look and produce great and i am happy with them. I also have some blues and a self blue project going that look good.

So are yours at a showing quality or somewhere around there? I haven't seen anyone else breeding them. Gamefowl breeders are hard to find. I was looking for ages for heritage malays

There's a Malay Breeder here, in Michigan. They're in Lapeer(Excuse my spelling) They traded me two pullets for my two extra cockerels. His gene pool was getting restricted.

There's also another Gamefowl Breeder, I just don't remember where they're located though, but still in Michigan.
