Cubalaya Thread For Sharing Pics and Discussing Our Birds

Yes they are the worst predator
Bobcats are my main predator here. Deadly fast and strike day or night. I solved the problem though by building huge fenced and fully net cover aviary yard. Have not lost a bird to predation in over two years. The predators eventually just gave up and moved out of my region. I let my birds out in the afternoon a little now to free range.

I had my first possum attack a month ago. I knew they could kill chickens but I was surprised all the same. Somehow it carried a full grown Orpington several yards from the barn and all I ever found were feathers. Trapped the possum a week later. I don’t mind killing raccoons but I did not like having to kill a possum because I consider them useful in other respects.
Not very useful if overpopulated. I trap and kill more of these than any predator. Coyotes and foxes dont like my electric fence. Minks dont like the motion lights. Coons seem to have enough food natural to leave my chickens alone. Occasional owl or hawk

Very interesting thought. I actually set the trap thinking I would get a raccoon because that’s what I usually get. There are loads of those but they haven’t gotten a chicken yet. I lost three to a bobcat and that’s the thing I really need to learn to trap.

I use sardines. Put a couple on the trigger tray and pour a little of the oil on nearby trees. Good for possum or coons

Do you use a live cage trap for bobcats? I have a dog so I can’t use a paw trap like I do with raccoons. I’ve used a cage trap for raccoons but it’s too much clean up. Sardines probably won’t work in my paw trap but I have good bait for that. If that works on a bobcat in a cage trap I will happily skip to the store and buy a mess of them.
