Cuckoo Marans and Barred Rock

If I cross my Cuckoo Marans Roo with my BR hen, will her chicks that grow into hens lay some darker eggs? Has anyone crossed these 2 breeds?

No but if you do you have to poat pics of the chicks.

His daughters will as long as he was hatched from an egg darker than your Barred Rock lays. There may only be a subtle difference.

yes, they should lay darker eggs if he comes from a dark egg blood line, Egg laying trait, egg laying color and many other unknown things are polygenic, and many of those polygenic traits are bound to be sex linked, and since a he´s only Z sex chromosome comes from her sire, she will inherit those traits....

so you want to have a dark egg laying type barred rock?you are going to have 2 breeding lines, a SIRE line and a DAME line, to start a DAME line first use a maran roo over a barred hen, keep the best dark egg laying hens,

to start a SIRE line use the best dark egg laying maran hen and mate it to a barred roo, keep the best roosters that you think have the most berred rock type,

Mate a F1 rooster from the SIRE line that looks the closest to barred rock, to your best F1 hen from the DAME line, then wait for the pullets from this mating to start laying, IF and only IF those Hens show a significant improvement on egg color, keep them, BUT if they don´t show any improvement and actualy lay lighter eggs, use another F1 rooster from the SIRE line, if you are lucky this will be your last mating in finding the right rooster, thats the problem with rooster, you can´t know if they carry the good dark egg laying traits untill you see their doughters start laying wich will take around 6 months..........good luck to you...

That is great information. I took a genetics class when I was an undergrad in Equine Science at Northwestern State LA. It's vaguely coming back to me. It should be an interesting experiement. I ended up with these 2 birds by accident. It seems you could make a great combo with these breeds, since they are similar, yet get the best traits of both. I'll post pics as they come along. They're 2 of my favorite birds. Thank you!
