Cuckoo Marans or Barred Rocks?

Marans can either be feather legged or not. The French standard calls for feathered legs. Those developed in England are clean legged. The legs should be white/pinkish. The cuckoo pattern is a little darker and less distinct than the barring on Plymouth Rock.

Plymouth Rocks should have clean yellow legs, and more distinct barring than a cuckoo Marans.

The ones in the photo look just like my Cuckoo Marans girl from a very good line, that lays a very dark egg.

Those are Cuckoo Marans and from what I can see in the photo, they don't look too shabby.

Note the pinkish/whitish legs, in contrast to the legs on the Red in the foreground. The feathering on the shanks could be there or not, it's basically either/or and a matter of breeder's preference. The bird would still be a Cuckoo Marans with clean legs. The tails look nice, they should be carried at 45 degrees above horizontal, not up like a Viking boat. I think it gives a very stately appearance. Also note that the barring is not nearly as clean and uniform as would be desired in a Barred Rock. It's Cuckoo. I guess that's the best way to describe it. Those are some pretty Cuckoos. I hope they lay some nice, dark eggs for you soon.

Rocks don't have feathered legs. And I think ( not 100% sure) that CM's will have a rose comb and rocks have a single comb. Good luck.
