Cucumbers

If you take care of those cucumber vines they will last until the end of summer. Give them plenty of food and water and keep the larger cucumbers picked and they will keep producing. I planted my cucumbers in March and picked my first cucumber at the end of April and my cucumber vines are still alive and producing cucumbers. I train mine to grow on the fence so they are much easier to pick and mow around.

I will make pickles one more time before the first frost kills my vines but in the mean time I slice them down the middle and feed the ones we don't eat to my chickens. They LOVE them.

I have a batch of fermented pickles going right now, using Alton Brown's recipie:

Just didn't put in the pepper flakes though, can't have them.

Made a bunch of bread and butter pickles and limed pickles as well, recipes are on the blog link in signature. My cuke patch is slowing down a bit due to the dry conditions here but I'm still getting enough to trade for other veggies.

I got this recipe from a friend in Germany.

Cucumber Salad

1 cup whipping cream
3 tablespoons white vinegar
1/2 onion, finely chopped
dill
salt & pepper
mustard
3 cucumbers, peeled and very thinly sliced

Mix together the vinegar and cream. It will curdle and look totally wrong, but just stir it up. Pour over the cucumbers and onions, and add seasonings to taste. It's best if you let it sit for a few hours or overnight.
