Thank you, yes they are and they deserve it. Couple of Shelties. Gracie's 13, Sammy's 5, not related. I can free range my chickens because of these two, mostly Gracie although Sammy's learning. Gracie's chased 3 coyotes off the property before, and Sammy's taught new neighbor's dog to stay off the property.

Those are some lucky dogs. I pressure can older birds as well, but that's people food at my house.

We had a 2 year old rooster that made the best gumbo imaginable a couple of years ago.

That's what I was thinking.
People food here too. 4 days a week I eat cockerel, rooster or tom.

People DEFINITELY food here. If I wasn't so far behind re-organizng my barn that I can't find the tools to reorganize my barn... and build another rabbit cage for the kits I expect in two weeks... I'd be culling.

Need to send 5 ducks, and probably 10 chickens to freezer camp. And a goat. Three goats, as soon as I have room.

We eat most of what we cull. I'm talking OLD chickens for the dogs! Or sick ones. We have a friend who gives us her really old, tough roosters. Again, great for broth but ... don't think we'd want to eat them unless I'm really missing something here. That's why I put rice and stuff in it and make small balls out of it, to stretch it for the dogs. Big treat for them.
