Culling - Is This Humane?

Massive head trauma--such as smashing with hammer, rock, brick or shooting the chick would be the most humane.

Snipping the head off with scissors would be your next best choice.

I know it is hard, but when it is the most humane choice, it is best to do it as quickly and efficiently as possible.

I am very sorry for you loss.

I'm a real wuss. I try to save everything. I have a standing deal with my vet. Anything chicken size or smaller is $10 to euthanize if my best efforts fail and the animal is suffering.

This is my method and it is proven to be successful

I have to agree here. I know a lot of good vets will humanely euthanize a small animal (or bird) for a nominal cost. Call around to see who might be able to do it for you.

When we had to cull one of our babies, my husband told me to stay inside and not look out the window. All he had to do was hold it's body and give it's head a hard blow against a hard surface, the chick was dead immeadiatley (not sure I spelled that right, LOL). I figure it was the best way, as it had severe leg deformities, and was crying constantly before that, so a quick blow to the head stopped it's suffering.

Hi everyone. Thanks for your help. In the end, I tried the jar method, but couldn't stand the thought of it taking so long. So hubby took the little one out back and did it in with the limb cutters.

So that's the new solution. Get hubby to do it.

I agree with letting someone else do it for you. I let my husband do the "dirty work." It doesn't bother him like it bothers me.

I had one that arrived in the mail very sick today that was suffering and dying slowly. For the first time ever, I had to take matters into my own hands because my husband wasn't here and it was suffering. I have felt horrible about it all day, but I know I did the right thing to end its suffering.

I had the EXACT same thing happen to me. Although, I didn't know that I had run over a kitten. I thought I ran over a toy and when I backed up again, I saw the kitten. It wasn't dead and I didn't know what to do. I was hysterical screaming and crying. I grabbed it with a towel and raced to the vet and ran in screaming for someone to put it to sleep. That still haunts me. What a horrible experience. I know how you feel.

This thread brings up a question for me: are men genetically less squeamish around the idea of killing animals than women? Or are they just culturally bound by the expectation that such things shouldn't bother them?

I would also be of the cry in hopes that DH will take over. He would do it, but I don't think he would enjoy it.

Are men just more pragmatic by nature?

It's probably social-cultural reasons on why "men" can do so and so when it comes to mental things such as the process of killing. Physical differences such as, how I probably don't want a 110lb female saving me from a burning building via a lift down a ladder.... ok, but culling a small animal, that's probably more social-cultural. In china, the women would go out and kill the "sunday chicken" when my mom was younger. So that's just one example.
