Curiosity has the best of me - Vegetarians.

I am not a vegetarian yet. As I get older... My body just doesn't process meat very well. especially steak... I can't digest it. so I don't eat it. I will eat a bit of chicken now and then but it seems to be doing the same thing... don't know why... So I just try and avoid meat. I love veggies and can eat them all day long.. beans are my favorite. So it would be very simple to become a vegetarian... Not because I have an issue with animals..or such... It is just a dietary choice for my stomachs sake.

Same boat here.....

I do enjoy protein. As I get older and eat less meat, I seem to eat more beans, yogurt, cheese and so forth.

SOOOOO.
Any one have a good vegetarian calico bean recipe???

I made the decision years ago because I wanted to feel better. I had lost my DMIL to cancer, she never smoked, drank or did anything other than have a animal protien diet.I read some books ( the most amazing one was The China Study ) and was shocked to see that we can eat ourselves right into cancer if were not careful. My hubby is a BIG hunter so im not the "save the animals" type. I cook venison, the chickens we get from fair and some Laura's lean red meat. I dont eat it at all, nothing in years. I dont miss it but boy do I feel better... Really I feel less of that morning "oohh gosh I ate to much" or the puffy feeling of holding water. ( ladies will know what I mean) I do offer it for my family in small amounts because the kids need the protien and wont always eat enough of the other stuff to get it. So I guess my reason for being a VEGGIE was simple. I want to live as long as possible to be here with my chickens...

One of my daughter in laws doesn't eat pork or beef and when I make Calico Beans I just leave the bacon out of a portion of it for her. I have a tiny crockpot that I put hers in while ours go in my big one. Sometimes I'll put some turkey bacon in hers, but she likes them just as well without.

Trust me, I am all for the humane treatment of animals, and despise the animal cruelty that is present in this world.

Me too....

HLL

Given that list... first off kudo's to you! But No... I guess it wouild be extremely difficult unless you lived in the back woods and never ever came out and foraged for your food...

I was forced to go veggie, so to speak, after I got divorced because I was left with so much debt to pay off I couldnt afford to buy meat. I call myself a semi-veggie now as I only eat fish or chicken and that is maybe once or twice a week at the most. I sure lost a lot of weight when I went meatless!! I probably didnt eat meat at all for about three years. I like those Boca burgers with cheese the most. Not such a fan of the other meatless products. If I make spaghetti, I use ground turkey meat, or just use the sauce by itself. I plan on doing raised gardens next year and growing my own veggies and my neighbor wants to buy some meaties and process them himself so I may go in with him to do that and get maybe get a few from him. I have heard that people with certain bloodtypes seem to lean towards vegetarianism more than others. For some, its a choice, others, I think your body lets you know what it needs.

I grew up on a farm and was taught from my first baby steps that we respect our animals and treat them well, kill them mercifully and thank them for their sacrifice. That said, I've always, always been anemic even when I was young and was being fed meat three times a day. When I got pregnant with my first child the doctor seemed to think I was in some kind of crisis because of my anemia and we kicked it up a notch and I was eating meat and beans and peanut butter and anything else I could glean a little protein from to cure this chronic anemia and make sure my baby was healthy. After she was born I couldn't LOOK at meat let alone eat the stuff and became a vegetarian for years and years. Just this last year I started eating a little meat again again because of the anemia. I feel better now (though I JUST got my blood tests back that say I'm still anemic.
