Thanks for the update - sorry to hear about the lack of movement.
Will look forward to watching your next experiment.

thats sad have you disposed of the eggs yet?? if not i would be sure they are deda before you do. I open on the 22 day I have noticed most to all of the chivks have deformities of they are in the eggs to long. if you decide to open them make it as close to the middle of the aircell as possible, and flash a light in to see id there is any movment. I also put a drip of water in the inside to see if there are any veins. If not and there is a live chick I help. I havent lost a chivk yet from the ones I have helped. Strangely enough they have all but one been a rooster.

no i have not disposed of the eggs. They are still in the incubator. I am planning on opening them up to see how far along they did get. I will keep you posted on that.

You should space your eggs out more, use the space for lockdown! I made the mistake of keeping them close so they can send good vibes to eachother and the first hatcher bulldozed all of them and rearranged them. It was like kick ball! My kids think he or she was trying to wake up the other eggs & get them to hatch but nothings happening, they were rocking and rolling up until then.

The hen has them all piled together, but she is also sitting on them so they don't go flying if bumped. Hatching in a carton with the bottom of each cup cut out helps with the issue of egg football. I have found that even if you space the eggs as far apart as possible, the hatched babies will still knock the unhatched/hatching across the bator if not in cartons or hatching baskets. This is even true of the tiny quail I hatch out.

Awww... I just read through this whole thread hoping for a happy ending. Sorry to hear it didn't turn out well.

About that egg that appeared to pip but then was dead--you're right on the money to suspect pressure building from the interior. Since it had been dead for a while, bacteria had begun to grow and build up. It's quite common for dead eggs to crack open, sometimes explosively. That's one of the main reasons to candle--so you can remove dead eggs before they reach this point and burst all over the incubator & other eggs.

I'm amazed that the eggs developed as they did in a toaster oven. How cool! I would have thought the temps would fluctuate too much. Amazing.

Can't wait to read your next adventure and see how it goes. Good luck!
