Curious question about coyotes

I assure you there is plenty of Coyote hunting going on in Goodhue county. Unless you are in town, hunters could have gotten them. But like other said, they are quiter this time of year. I hunt coyote's and know plenty of hunter in Goodhue county. If they get to bad, let me know and I'll send over some reinforcements to thin them out.

I agree with those above me and have seen it happen as well. They trick the dog into coming out of its safe zone and then the pack attacks.

I dont know if anyone said this or not, but the reason you aren't hearing them now is the pups are in the dens. Coyotes dont want everyone knowing where their dens are, so they do tend to "lay low" from pup birth until the pups are out of the dens.

Yeah, usually out at my parents we are over-run with the coyotes. Maybe someone got tired of it, I just hadnt heard anything.
I remember standing outside at night, many nights, and it seemed like the whole valley was alive with them. I had the little dog on a leash and didnt go too far from the house with him.
My sister, husband and her family live out in the country and the coyotes are always trying to lure their old dog off. She has had some run ins with them, must be a tough dog cause she is still alive.

Thats interesting about the pups being in the dens now. Learning that from your post and others previous. Thanks!

Please be careful with your dogs. The coyotes are not trying to play - they are trying to get your dogs to follow them and then the rest of the pack ambushes and kills the dogs.

It is a very common and successful coyote tactic.

Oh, I know. At the same time I must say the one coyote did play with the neighbors dog (no fence in between) and later left. I would never let my dogs out following any of them. We always take a rifle with us when we go out hiking with the dogs, just because we know they are around and we have seen them while hiking. A shot into the air makes them take off and our dogs run back to us. Good that you did post this, because someone may not know better and may loose their beloved pet.

this is NOT always true . i had a large dog that free ranged in the muntains < he was people freindly and animal friendly and none of our neighbors minded, he ran off with the coyotes atleast once a mounth AND played. coyotes DO play(thats how their young learn) its true that the do lure dogs and ambush them but its not as comon as people think

sorry should restate that , small or weak/timid dogs will be vued more as food (at least this is my expierience from the coyotes around us) but they always play with/ run with the dogs in my parents area and in 15 years they havent eaten them. tho people have lost cats and small dogs the larger ones seem to be fine

yotetrapper is right this time of the year they have young pups in the den. wait about a month or so and you will probably hear them again. once the pups get weaned off mom and start eating real food, they will be on the prowl. seems in my area thats when they give us the most trouble. in my area they also don't "play" w/ dogs, usually a female will try to lead your male dog out of the safety zone and then the reat of the pack will attack, this has been confirmed in my area and it also did happen to a friend of mine out by capecod, ma and they had a full size german shepard, who was killed by the coyotes.
