The cinema was open today (Christmas Day), so I took myself off to see "The Greatest Showman". I enjoyed it. Good story, some suspense, characters you care about and some pretty impressive (in a visual sense) song-and-dance numbers. The modern songs and dancing seemed to fit the theme of the movie. Jackman and all of the cast give it their all. Some critics have been bashing this one, but I found it entertaining (and worth cashing in most of my accumulated cinema points on). (If you are thinking of seeing it, just don't read the reviews....)

(saw the preview of The Darkest Hour. If Gary Oldman doesn't get an oscar, it'll have to be somebody pretty good up against him. He is Churchill - and that's just from seeing the trailer.)
 
Sorry Sour et al. I'm not a history buff and I kept dozing off watching "The Darkest Hour." My brother on one side of me (lots of sinus issues) cleared his throat & sniffled about a hundred times during the movie, woman stranger on other side of me was coughing her lungs out. Figured if I slept - all the germs wouldn't find me.
 
Today we saw "The Shape of Water," which is probably the best movie I can recall seeing. I would go back and watch again if I could. I don't want to say more because it is best if people experience it - going in blindly.

There is some profanity, including profane "signing," as the lead character is mute. Also nudity and some disturbing violence. My brother said he rates it a 4 out of 4 stars, my son never comments, I give it my highest award 10 stars out of 4. That's what is known as "diva's movie math."

I think movie goers will either love or hate it- no in between. How refreshing though to have a movie that is not a remake, sequel or prequel.
 
Thanks drumstick. Guillermo del Toro is fantastic. Have you seen Pan's Labyrinth? I only saw it recently. It's a brilliant movie. Can't wait to see this one, but I know I'll need to be in the right mood for it.

EDIT: Holey moley, have you seen the list of awards and nominations it's already got? When do the oscar nominations come out?

Must be potato chip. Supposed to see "All the Money in the world," about the Getty grandson kidnapping. That's what my brother wants to see. I'd prefer the "Greatest Show on Earth" with Hugh Jackman. My son(adult) says he'd rather STAY HOME/
 
I saw the trailer for "All the Money in the world" It looked ok, but not lighthearted entertainment, that's for sure. I really enjoyed "The Greatest Showman", more than I was really expecting to. That new one with Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks also looks pretty good, but I'm not sure whether I want to see it at the cinema, I prefer to watch "heavy-going" movies on dvd so I can stop them and do something else when they get a bit too intense.
I really want to see the new Guillermo del Toro, but I'm not sure when it opens (unless it's a special screening, the cinema schedule doesn't show more than a week ahead, I was trying to find an advance screening, but couldn't find one). A couple of weeks, I think. I'm also going to see a new australian comedy called Swingin' Safari.
