Current Movies - Thumbs UP or Thumbs DOWN

Just came back from seeing The Force Awakens. Eh, I think it's probably the best movie I've ever seen: 5 out of 5 stars. It had a good plot, characters, and actors. This movie appeals to those who loved the prequel trilogy and those people who grew up with the original trilogy. The special effects were AMAZING...especially the lightsaber battles! Well, I'd say more but I don't want to give anything away. I would encourage ya'll to see it!

Thanks for the review. We will be going to the 7 pm showing on Saturday evening. :o)

We went to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens last night and thought it was very entertaining, although I'm not sure that any of us thought it was the best Stars Wars film yet; the nod for that still probably goes to The Empire Strikes Back which was slightly superior from top to bottom to The Force Awakens. Here is my summary of the best, the good, the okay, and the bad from The Force Awakens.

The Best: Daisy Ridley was great in the role of Rey. She is a character that we could relate to in the movie, and she is obviously incredibly strong in the force having done some of the amazing things she was able to do with zero training in the force to this point.

The Good: There's lots of the good including Han Solo who gives energy and entertainment to the film as he has done to all the Star Wars films, BB-8 who is an incredibly cute and funny little droid, the special effects which were great, the meeting at the end of the film between Rey and Luke Skywalker, and the overall entertainment value of the film. Many of the film's elements are a direct take off of the elements of the first trilogy. Rey becoming an the new Luke Skywalker with a bit of Leia Organa thrown in, Kylo Ren the new Darth Vader, Luke set to become the new aging Obi Wan Kenobi who failed in training his first student who went over to the dark side and taking on the role of a new apprentice who is stronger in the force and will become the savior of the alliance, Poe becoming the new Wedge the galaxy's best pilot, Snoke becoming the new Emperor and a dark Sith, and the First Order's new ultimate planet destroying weapon becoming the new Death Star. Because so many elements are rehashed from the original trilogy, in my opinion it makes the movie fall just short of the greatness of The Empire Strikes Back, but since those are the same elements which made the original trilogy so good to start with, they are still a lot of fun in The Force Awakens.

The Okay: Finn, while funny at times, was not a major contribution to the film and could have been replaced by almost anyone. John Boyega did a good job with what he had to work with, but there is still a lot of untapped potential in the Finn character. Hopefully it will come through in the next film. There was nothing wrong with Princess Leia in the film, but she simply did not have enough of a role to be significant. Kylo Ren was okay in the role of the evil Sith but was slightly disappointing in his lack of Darth Vader's presence and power. He simply did not come across as the menacing presence that Vader did.

The Bad: Without spoiling the moment with details, we all thought the only thing bad in the movie was the terrible act committed by Kylo Ren toward the end of the movie which will definitely leave a void in the last two films. If you've seen the movie you will know to what act I am referring and if you haven't you will know it the moment you see it.

In Summary, although perhaps not quite the best film in the Star Wars series, The Force Awakens is a very good and entertaining film and definitely worth the price of a movie ticket. The film built up to its finale with Rey meeting Luke and which definitely has us looking forward to the next film. The burning question we are all speculating over now is--will Rey turn out to be Luke Skywalker's daughter?

WE ( my brother, my adult son, and I ) saw Star Wars: the Awakening early this morning. My son gave it 5(out of 4 stars) , my brother and I each, gave it 4 stars. My son is going to see it again tomorrow with his friends.

I found the movie to be very entertaining, except for some of the low points Michael outlined. My brother and I are not Star Wars fans but, enjoyed the action even though confused a lot about who's who of characters. We do know the older characters from way back and enjoyed seeing them. But, I also enjoyed the minor appearance of one of the actors from "Heroes,"

All I have read about in published reviews was the very strong chemistry between Finn and Rey, I didn't feel it at all. They do make a very cute couple. I am also disappointed in that after leaving the movie theatre I was not rehashing it in my mind. It was over and done. I prefer movies that stay with me and raise many questions to ponder.

I on the other hand go to movies solely for entertainment, distraction and temporary immersion. I don't normally want or seek "questions to ponder" as I already have enough of those in my life. I'm going to the movies to get away from same...

I agree with most of what you said--the main thing I did not like was how the plot copied a lot of the plot in A New Hope. However, I think it is my favorite Star Wars so far. Actually, The Empire Strikes Back is my least favorite star wars

I am power watching "Arrested Development".
It is pretty good so far. Ellen's wife is smoking hot for sure.

The Empire Strikes Back is not my favorite Star Wars either, but most fans (myself included) think it was technically the best film of the Star Wars movies. It typically has the highest ratings from sites like Rotten Tomatoes (with both critics and viewers) of any of the Star Wars films. I never got the sense of a boring or wasted moment or character in The Empire Strikes Back and evidently a lot of other viewers feel the same way. And as drumstick diva said, boy did The Empire Strikes Back leave many questions to ponder. However, The Force Awakens was a lot of fun which is what I go to the movies for in the first place. :o)
