Calling the Sheriff would only cause additional problems with the neighbors. I did what I thought was best. The dogs will never kill another of my birds, or anyone else's. They are now in the process of enriching the bottom part of my raised garden bed, covered them with lime and 3 feet of dirt.

Yup, electric fence, duh! My parents always had that around any animal pen. I had forgotten it's effectiveness. Also, am going to use hardware cloth instead of the dog wire. Or maybe I will use both.
Sigh, love my chickens, but just to start seems to cost more if I want to keep them safe.

EDIT*** Don't opt for the battery supply. It runs down too quickly should something short the fence out. Get a plug in charger that will bite hard.

It is very sad you had to lose all your birds because of someone elses neglance. I know it was also tramatic for you to have to shot the dogs. No one who loves animals likes to resort to those means. But you have to protect what is yours. I hope you can recover, regroup, and start over. I don't know of any wire that will deter a determined preditor.(Except one little one carrying 6000V) If they can get a toe nail in it they can tear it loose. They can dig a hole under it faster than you can load a shotgun. Best wishes, good luck. !

wire fencing buried under dirt or vegetation, even sat on top of ground with the grasses allowed to grow through is quite tough to tear up, it is a good method to keep things out. I would like to race a varmint digging under my fence, I have plenty of practice at loading all of my shotguns, and rifles, and pistols, it would be a bad day for that varmint.
