[Part 1]
The dragon planet of Draconat was at peace, but evil something was brewing under the mainlander’s noses..

The oceans which the Aquations lived had been cursed!

It was very subtle at first, a slight cloudiness in the water, but the situation soon grew dire. The Aquation Monarche, Current, stopped visiting the other Tribes. The dragons on the mainland knew that something was wrong, but did nothing about it. The waters became black and cloudy, but the Virus didn’t just affect the water..

It affected dragons.

Reports started pouring in of skinny, red-eyed, violent Aquations attacking innocent dragons near the shores. The Solosis, Enfernae, and Aerattl soon learned to stay away from the deadly oceans.

But that wasn’t all..
Rivers, lakes, streams, underground water sources, all began to be affected as well. Dragons began panicking. If there was nothing to drink- they would die. But if they drank the cursed waters, they would go crazy- just like the Aquations.

Then one day, the Enfernae Monarche, Ember, stepped down from the throne- letting her daughter Vixen take control of the kingdom.
Vixen certainly was.. different. To her mother’s disappointment. She chose her own advisors instead of taking the ones her mother offered her, and she had something the Enfernae hadn’t seen for years on the throne.. compassion for other Tribes.

Vixen was set on curing the ocean waters and tying to help the Aquations. Her scientists and her studied, and learned that wyrms and pupa weren’t affected by the Virus, probably because of their thicker scales.
They studied for days..
Then weeks..
Then months..

Until..

Monarche Basalt startled deep in his secret underground cave. A small rescued Aqauation wyrm splashed in one of the last clean water sources in Solosis next to him. He alerted his Royal Guard and his advisor, Sterling, quickly. He called his son Moss to his side as well. “We need to go to Enfernae.” Basalt had told Moss. The newly turned Imago had cocked his head. “Why?” Basalt stared towards the sunset, his large black talons digging into the rough, gravelly, Solosis dirt. “I’ve been summoned. Something very serious has happened, and Monarche Ember has called us to the Tallcanyon House.”

Storm sat upright quickly, her paperwork wrinkling under her clenched talons. She turned to the guard in the doorway. “Get Advisor Zephyr.” She said, her face serious. “Get the Royal Guards for an escort. We need to go to Enfernae.” The guard’s brow furrowed. “Your majesty?” He said. Storm nodded. “Go. It’s very important.” The wind dragons gathered and flew to the kingdom of the fire dragons- the earth dragons not far behind.

A black dragon stood atop a spire in the darkness on the Tallcanyon House’s tall roof. His steely eyes surveyed the approaching Monarches in the fading light of dusk. As the sudden darkness of night hit, he turned,
and nearly fell off the roof.
“Who are you and what are you doing up here?” Questioned a dragon in the night. Flint gasped, “Oh- oh, nothing my friend! What are you doing here?” Zephyr narrowed her eyes, difficult to see in the darkness. “Are you here to attack the Monarches? Speak!” “Oh no, my friend!” Flint defended. “You must be mistaken, I was merely looking out for them.. but, I must be going now! Please excuse me!” The black dragon flew away into the night,
Advisor Zephyr might have forgotten about it, but an odd glint in the mysterious Enfernae’s eyes made her think otherwise..

[Part 2]
“Monarches, welcome!” Vixen greeted Basalt and Storm into her gathering room. “I have something very special to show you!” Storm’s one clear eye and Basalt’s hard brown ones studied a large water tank in the room.

“You know how the waters are cursed, right?” The eight-legged fire dragon went on, “Me and my scientists have devised a plan to save the Aquations! Introducing!” She held up a small pill for the congregated dragons to see. “The dragon who eats this will be able to breathe underwater for around 2-3 hours at a time, just like an Aquation.”
Storm and her advisor Zephyr were optimistic; “It really works?” Storm said, and Vixen handed off two capsules to them, taking one herself. “Climb in!” She told them, and went into the water herself. Suffering liquid dampening her scales was a pain, but being able to breathe underwater gave Vixen bright ideas for the future.
The earth dragon Monarche, on the other hand, was hesitant. He refused the capsule.
“We may be able to breathe underwater,” Basalt said. “But that won’t stop us from getting the Virus.”
Vixen climbed out of the tank to face the large black dragon. “No,” she said. “That’s why I’ve decided to send out papers offering a position on the mission for pupa- as they’re naturally immune to the Virus because of their thick shells. Of course, I’m not allowing pupa who are about to crack.. and they will need special training, but I believe that once my scientists create the Cure, that this will work!”
Basalt’s eyes widened as the Aerattl climbed out of the tank as well. “Your going to send pupa to Aqauation??” He roared. “Don’t you know how dangerous this is?”

The two Monarches left the Tallcanyon House- Aerattl willing to help Monarche Vixen, and the Solosis unwilling.

Flint landed with a heavy, dejected thud in front of a seemingly smooth-walled cliff at the heart of the ash-rock range. He turned a small stone a certain way and a secret door opened up in front of him. He stalked through the entrance and shut it behind him, leaving him in pitch-blackness.
Then, dead silence.

Finally a deep, ominous voice rang from the back of the cavern, beyond where he could see.
"You failed. MISERABLY."

Flint winced and had a thousand excuses running through his head, but he knew that none would prove satisfactory. He blew it big time and he was going to really get it.

The voice went on:

"I give you one chance to redeem yourself. I have a special assignment that would be harder for you to butcher."
"Wh-what is it, master?" Flint asked nervously. This was going better than it should and he wasn't quite sure why.

“I want you to bring me an Aquation.”
“Which one, master?”

A pause.

"Her name is Tide. She was adopted by an Aerattl named Starshine and her son Whisp. Go find them and bring the aquation to me ALIVE."
Flint turned to go.

"BEFORE YOU LEAVE."
He stopped in his tracks at the sound of the voice.
"BEFORE YOU LEAVE, a few final commands. ONE, this needs to be done quietly. Two, do it at night if at all possible. Three, you are to MAKE CERTAIN that you are not connected with her disappearance in ANY way.
You have my orders now GO!"

Flint left the cavern for the bright sunlight of the new morning as quickly as he could.

[End]

“Let go!” Yelled an angry young Aquation.
She was clawing uselessly with her small wyrm claws at the thick shell of an Aerattl pupa, who had his thick, winding body wrapped around her- stopping her from entering the ocean water. Another Aerattl ran up, a black, beautiful older dragon. “Stop struggling! I’ll let go if you don’t go in the water!” The young wyrm immediately stopped, and the pupa let go. “Sorry,” she said. “I forgot.” The pupa clenched his teeth, rolling in luminescent orange seaweed for comfort against his tight scales. “That’s okay. Oww..”
“Is everything all right Whisp?” The black dragon said, reaching into a bag around her neck for ointment. “Yeah, it’s good mom.” Whisp said, looking over at the Aquation. “She just forgot.” Starshine looked over at the wyrm, who was popping foamy black bubble on the shore, her talons digging longingly into the damp sand. “Tide.” Starshine said, sitting next to her. “Are you alright? We’re just about to head back to the clinic.” The little wyrm nodded. “Yeah.. it’s just- all of my scales feel dry and it feels weird being on land. It feels.. wrong.”
The nurse thought for a moment.
“Well, back at the clinic, I have a tank of clean rainwater, if you’d like to swim in that. That is.. if you’d like to.. come home with us. Do you have anywhere else?” Tide’s eyes brightened. “You mean it? I can stay with you? All I have is a little cave near the shore..” the blue dragon’s eyes dropped and her face grew sad. “My- my mom left me there and didn’t come back.” She said, tears beginning to form.
Starshine put an arm around Tide’s neck and smiled softly. “You can stay with us.” She said warmly. “Y- You won’t.. you know, leave me- will you?” Tide said shakily. The black dragon’s eyes grew hard. “No. Never. I don’t know what kind of a mother you had, but I’d never leave you behind.” Tide smiled up at the Aerattl, and wrapped to webbed talons around her neck. “Thank you!” She said, letting go only to get pummeled in the face with a scoop of wet sand.
“Now I have a little sister!” Whisp shouted happily from his position in the seaweed. Tide giggled happily and shook the sand off her head.

[Part 3]
Vixen let a long breath out, a shuddering sigh. “I should really see what my mother has to say about my mission.” She said softly to Rowan and Mao, her newly appointed advisors. The large stone door to her mother’s private chamber lay threateningly before her talons. “And that’s.. bad?” Mao said, while Rowan looked at Vixen with concern. The young Monarche traced a talon in between the stones on the floor. “Well- she’s very stubborn, and she has a way of digging into your mind and finding your fears, then laying them out before you..” “Well she sounds wonderful.” Rowan said grimly. Vixen nodded and took a deep breath. “Well, I should go. Better me to her than her come to me.” The red dragon squeezed her eyes shut, then opened them and pulled the heavy stone door aside, entering her mother’s chamber.

“Ahh, my daughter!” Ember’s voice purred upon hearing approaching talonsteps. “How have you been? How have your advisors been, well?” Vixen winced.
“Well, I didn’t think the two.. elders you gave me would suit the job very well, so I- chose different ones.” Smoke began to pour from her mother’s nostrils as anger rose.
“I’ve begun a mission..” Vixen went on. “Oh, have you now?” Ember snarled. “A- And it includes saving the Aquations and curing the oc-“ “Saving the Aquations?” The older Enfernae broke into gales of laughter. “Who cares about them? Water-breathers. I’m glad Current stopped visiting.”
Ember leaned in on the new Monarche’s face. “You and your stupid compassion for other Tribes. They don’t do anything for us! Caring about other dragons is a weakness. Your pathetic ‘friendliness’ will lead to your downfall.” Ember snarled, her face twisted into a malicious grin.

Vixen fled the room with tear-filled eyes.
Rowan ran up to Vixen as she burst out of the room. “Vixen! How did it-“ the new Monarche brushed past him without a word, tears streaming down her face.
The two advisors shared a glance. “I’ll go.” Rowan said, and followed after her.

The fiery-colored dragon sat next to Vixen on the warm stone stairwell. Sobs racked her, and Rowan tentatively put a talon on her shoulder. “What did she say.” He said quietly.
Vixen sniffed and wiped her eyes. “It- Its just like I said before. All she sees in me is- is the worst. I- I’ll never be good enough.” Vixen broke into tears again.
On the inside, Rowan was fuming. A past Monarche or not, Ember had no right to talk to Vixen this way.
“Maybe I should try talking to her.” He said, a hint of a growl in his voice. Vixen looked into his eyes. “You can’t convince her of anything, her heart’s as hard as stone.” Rowan stood up, looking lovingly down as Vixen. The purple accents in her scales shone beautifully in the light of the sun shining in through a window.
Rowan looked towards her mother’s chamber. “I don’t have to convince her of anything.” He said strongly. “I’m going to talk to her.”

Ember lifted her head. Vixen was coming back again? Foolish wyrm.
But instead, an eight-legged dragon with fiery scales and blue accents walked in, frowning at her. “And who are you?” Ember snarled.
“Advisor Rowan.” The newcomer said promptly. “I’m here on behalf of Vixen- how dare you speak to your own daughter that way?” The hot-tempered Enfernae before him laughed menacingly. “And what do you care?” She hissed. “Vixen isn’t fit to rule anymore. I thought she’d make wise choices, accept the advice from the advisors I gave her, but NO.” Ember spat. “Instead the selfish wyrm chose you for an advisor. A stupid choice.”

“Vixen is NOT stupid!” Rowan roared furiously, startling Ember.

“She is beautiful! I’d know, because I love her!” The male Enfernae stopped. That had just slipped out, he loved Vixen? He certainly liked her more than a friend..

“LOVE her?!” And Rowan looked up angrily again. Ember laughed, a horrible cackle.
“FOOL! You don’t love her! You only love her power! Her money! How could a lowly snake like you love Vixen?”
Rowan glared at her, gritting his teeth. “I do love her. And I care about her- something you wouldn’t know anything about.” He spat, turning his back on Ember and leaving the room.

Rowan slammed the heavy stone door shut.

[Part 4]
About three weeks have passed.

Tide and Whisp busied around the clinic, packing several tonics and medicines for Starshine. “I’ve never been to the Cloud City before, what’s it like Whisp?” Tide asked.
The new, shiny-scaled Imago smiled. “It’s great! The guards at the top have bracelets for visiting Tribes, so they can fly and breathe easier in the high altitude. The city looks light and floaty- like an Aerattl!” He laughed.
The handsome green and gold Imago had cracked yesterday, causing Tide to freak out because of his yelling- but it turned out just to be an added dramatic effect. Starshine had laughed. “I did the same thing when I cracked my pupa shell.” She had said to a grinning Whisp. “My parents freaked out too, of course.”

But now Whisp looked better than ever with his shining emerald and gold scales.
“It sounds awesome!” Tide piped up happily. It felt great to be cared by someone who she knew wasn’t going to leave her behind. “Are you almost ready, mom?” Tide said. The young pupa had taken to calling Starshine ‘mom.’ Whisp did it, and she was practically his sister, so why couldn’t she?
Starshine nodded as she came from the small greenhouse in the back “Just about. Don’t forget to grab some of the seaweed lotion and the aloe vera.” The black dragon with white scattered scales buckled on her medical supply bag and went outside, where a fresh ocean breeze blew in from. Tide grabbed the seaweed lotion from a shelf. “So what does the clinic in-town look like anyway?” The little blue and sand-colored dragon asked her brother. “Well, it’s pretty much like this one. I think the in-town one is bigger though, cause there’s more dragons.” “Oh, cool!” Tide said, fitting a bag around her neck.
“Hurry up you two!” Starshine called. “It’s evening and I want to get to the clinic before nightfall!”
“Oop- we’d better go.” Whisp said, floating gracefully out the door. “Wait for me!” Tide called, and followed her brother.

Midnight.

A dark shadow shifted silently on the roof of Starshine’s beachside clinic. A small glint of light reflected off a periscope held in the dark form’s talons. It slowly lowered.
Seemingly talking to himself, the dragon said; “They’re long gone.”

A deep voice hissed dangerously. “You’ve never BEEN so worthless to me as of these days.”

Flint winced as though the speaker had been right in front of him in person. “I can-“
“NO.” The voice interrupted.
“I have sent Azira to complete what you could not.
“And I had
better not see your face until you can do something actually USEFUL for me for once.”

The black Enfernae pressed his teeth together. Hard. He’d get Tide. He’d get her and bring her before his master. NO ONE could tell him that he wasn’t useful..

Except Apollyon.

Much later…

Amethyst groaned. What had last happened in her mind? Well, in real life, that it.
She remembered her daddy putting her to bed..
“Good night, sweetheart.” “Nighty-night, daddy!” Amethyst said. Axel smiled lovingly at her. “Are you sure your okay?” He said, a slight concern still riding his voice from earlier. Amethyst rolled her eyes. “Silly daddy, of course I’m all right.” “A fall like that could hurt pupa like you!” Axel said still, and Amethyst giggled. “Your so funny daddy, of course I’m okay! Our ceiling is only as high as five mes! You keep ducking your head!” “Yes, well-“ “C’mon daddy, I’m going to sleep now, see?” The furry little pupa struck a ridiculous sleeping position, and Axel chuckled. “Yes, I see. Okay, my dearest. Goodnight.” The large Solosis kissed his daughter and left her room silently.

She remembered sneaking out..
One eye blinked open.
Two.
The furry, batlike pupa hopped eagerly out of her bed and peered around the corner of her room. Axel lay silently, softly breathing. Amethyst smiled, and hopped over to her bed. She stuck her head under, her antennae wiggling eagerly as she lifted a secret trapdoor up- just enough space for her body to fit.
She crept slowly down the tunnel leading to the Great Cave- humming a quiet little song to herself.

And she remembered talking with her friend at the mouth of the Great Cave..
“Guess who!” Amethyst giggled, clapping her furry, iconic paws over a green Solosis’ eyes.
“Let me guess.. Amethyst!” Shilah said happily. “Yep!” The little pupa cheered. “Why did you want to meet me?”

And she also remembered..
OH.
“I want to volunteer to be one of the pupa on the mission.” Shilah said. Amethyst cocked her head, one of her furry batlike ears flopping comically. “Really? Your dad let you?” She said, and Shilah squirmed uncomfortably.
“Well, he didn’t
let me..” She said, looking down at the floor.
“Ohhh, so your gonna sneak! Like a spy! Super-sneaky!” Shilah let out a small laugh. “Well- try.” Amethyst bounced up and down. “Maybe we can both do it! Well, no.” She stopped. “Hm- daddy would ground me for a million thousand hundred and one years if he found out I snuck away, especially for a big Enfernae mission.” “Yeah, he-“ Shilah stopped talking suddenly, and Amethyst turned around. “ShilaaaAAAHHHH!! Huh? who’re you!”

A large, masked Enfernae stood at the entrance of the cave, holding an unconscious Shilah in one of her long, prehensile tails. The light blue dragon with red wings dropped the unconscious pupa and stepped over to Amethyst. She glanced up, and seeing that no one was alerted by Amethyst’s scream, looked back down to her.
“Your coming with me.”
“Why? Why is Shilah asleep- wait- you are you? I mean who are you? Did my daddy send you?” Amethyst said with almost a scolding tone.
“Not quite.” The masked figure said, and threw a bag over Amethyst’s head before knocking her out.

Amethyst sat up and looked around. “Whoah- dizzy..” she said, taking a misstep and knocking over a beaker of.. something red.
She was on a large, metal table in the middle of what looked like a laboratory- except the walls were rock.
“Wait a minute..” she said, glancing around. “Was I just.. kidnapped?” A big smile spread across her face. “I got kidnapped! This is so COOL! I’ve never gotten kidnapped before!” She looked around at the beakers and test pallets laying around her. “Hello?” She called.
No one.
Amethyst quickly lost interest. “Okay, this is boring. Blue dragon? Helloooo? Your prison is weird and I wanna go home now! It was fun getting kidnapped, but my daddy’s gonna flip out if he find out I’m gone.”
Still nothing.
“Your a pretty sucky captor!” The furry pupa yelled, and knocked over a couple more beakers- a few shattering on the floor. “Oopsy.” Amethyst said, looking over the table edge. “Oh no, I’m breaking all your shiny expensive stuff, you better come stop me!”
Again, nothing.
Amethyst sighed, annoyed.
