He was so fixated on his crystal that Lepidoptera almost didn’t notice the suspicious creaking noises echoing from the walls of the cavern. He flicked his antennae uneasily, concerned that he had awoken some ancient source of evil, or one of those kinds of things that happened in movies*. The walls of the cavern groaned as though strained, and a crumble of stone drifted onto his head. He watched with horror as the crystal structure holding up the entire cavern rattled and crunched. That can’t be good he thought, instinctively moving towards the water. Maybe it’s just…settling? Sure enough, the odd noises stopped abruptly, dislodging another puff of dust from the ceiling. Ok…no more crystals for you Lepidoptera, the last thing we need is this whole thing collapsing on top of us. He thought with a breath of relief. Just then, he spotted the way out. It was high above the water on the opposite end of the cavern, but not too high to climb. The first thing Lepidoptera was aware of as he came to was an earthy, mosslike smell that did not at all resemble his usual sleeping places. Cold…why is it cold? He thought, cracking one eye open. He found himself staring at a fat cave mushroom, sprouting out of a mossy clump embedded in the side of some sort of…crystalline structure? He sat up, confused, and abruptly remembered where he was. The tunnel…the cave mushrooms…why am I still alive? He wondered. Not feeling any worse for wear despite poisoning himself, he looked around the cavern once again. I should get out of here, who knows how long I’ve been out for…but which way did I come in from? He glanced back at the crystals. Hmm…I came all this way, shouldn’t I take one of these with me? No one would believe me otherwise. Deciding that was the best plan, he pulled on a smaller shard of stone, about two feet long with a deadly sharp point. It was harder to dislodge than he’d thought, but eventually he heard a grinding sound showing that it was coming loose. Ripples spread through the water surrounding the island. With a satisfying snap, the shard finally came loose from the main cluster. Lepidoptera looked it over with satisfaction.
Lepidoptera paddled awkwardly through the cave water. He’d never been the best swimmer, he spent most of his time in the air and the water was corrupted anyway. He was relieved when he reached the cave wall. He already had one claw on it when he heard a disturbing splintering sound, coming from behind him. He froze, terrified to look back for what he might see. The barley-audible splintering sound was replaced by a mighty crack, the cave walls shuddering under his touch. He turned…and saw the pillar in the center split in half, the other crystals caving in towards it. The splintering, cracking turned into a roar as the whole cave shuddered inwards, the rocks above his head dislodging and tumbling into the water. He clambered frantically up the now-falling-apart cave wall, squeezing through the small crack. He clamped the crystal fragment in the mouth and ran, weaving through the narrow tunnel and bumping clumsily into stalactites. He didn’t stop to look back, he didn’t need to. he could hear the enraged roar of crumbling, breaking rocks crashing into each other, stalactites shattering into the ground, moss crushed in the tumult. Lepidoptera was already showered with rock dust, but still he kept running. Not going to make it…not going to make it… he thought single-mindedly.He was so fixated on his crystal that Lepidoptera almost didn’t notice the suspicious creaking noises echoing from the walls of the cavern. *shilah had taken a break from training and was exploring some. She looked around with curiosity when she spotted a tunnel that unknowingly lead down to where he is. She poked her head in before slipping in all the way, but the ground was loose, steep and slick so she ended up uncontrollably sliding downward with a scream.*He was so fixated on his crystal that Lepidoptera almost didn’t notice the suspicious creaking noises echoing from the walls of the cavern.
