Open the coop this morning, everyone scurries on out, check for eggs and see drops of blood everywhere. Find one of my hens has blood all over her face and chest, scoop her up and bring her inside start flushing the area on top of her bill, it's a flap the size of a dime. Once I got it clear and stopped the bleeding, I sprayed it with Vetericyn. She's in the quarantine run outside, but I'm wondering if I'll need to bring her inside for a couple of days to limit the contact with dirt that she'll be noodling up?: Besides spraying more Vetericyn is there anything else I should do?

Checked the coop for any sharp edges and couldn't find any, there is a hardware cloth divider, but the edges are completely protected from them. Could she have possibly cut her bill from rubbing on it?

She's a sweet pea and is acting fine, but of course, worried mama over here. Thanks in advance!

The extent of the injuries appears fairly superficial and minor, so in long run repeated applications of an antibacterial ointment should suffice. If desired, a hydrogel or waterproof stick bandage can be placed for a few days to help protect the wound from debris, and bacterial contamination.

Thank you for the help! I’ll be running out in a minute to grab some waterproof bandages for that extra protection.

Small update - reached out to our mobile poultry vet that's run by a local college, waiting to hear back. The cut is now very swollen & squishy. She still has energy and is eating, but I'm wondering if they need to cut away at the swollen part to flatten things back out to heal better.

I'll try to get a picture of the bump, it's about the size of a pea but is not connected (still a flap). Today I added a bit of polysporin under the bandaid and am keeping her inside for the next couple of days. How bad will this stress her out to be alone? Should I put another duck in with her?

Let her outside into the quarantine run for a minute & she ended up opening it back up. Did a light bit of investigating it and the dark stuff is not dirt, it's tissue, and the top part can be lifted a bit, but then it just starts bleeding a lot. Cleaned her up again, more polysporin, and she's in a carrier with a towel over it.

Picture hidden below.

It may be infected.
Do you have access to a vet?
