cute as a button quails

Hi all, I just adopted 3 one week old button quails. Ive had them for 2 days now. First off they are just the cutest tiniest things ever. Hahahaha. My experience with them so far.... Day we brought them home I was already worried, all they did was sleep and sleep and sleep. Woke up the next morning only to hear allot of peeping and to find they had eaten all of their food. So I felt relieved that yay they were eating and healthy. Then, I discovered one of them had one eye closed shut. I didnt inspect it good enough when I went to go pick them out of the bunch. Well the one with the shut eye hasnt been eating the rest of the day and was just sleeping for the rest of the day. Well I let the lil one sleep all day and night. Before bed I was worried as it looked like the lil one was growing weaker. So I had to do something. So I took a soaking wet paper towel and dripped water drops on its beak. Thank goodness it started to drink, and drank allot. Next, I was like hmmm how can I get it to eat. I took the chick crumble mixed it with water and dipped a qtip in it and held it to its beak. Again, thank goodness it realized it was food and slowly ate it. Then ate more and more. Boy was I happy! Lil thing is now more active and is eating on its own. But, I've yet to see it drink on its own. So this morning I had to drip water on its beak again. As for the eye... Last night I wiped it with warm water then there was white stuff coming out, I'm assuming puss???? So I cleaned that up and it's good to know that it's lil eye is open its just swollen shut I guess and not just deformed. I dunno if its just me but the eye looks as if the swelling went down a lil. I'm continuing to keep a close watch on it. But in the mean time I'm so glad it's eating on its own and has lots more energy than before. It's even now fallowing the other two whenever they go exploring, before that one would just stay in the lil house where they sleep. Lastly, I have put a tiny dose of garlic powder in the food as it is a natural antibiotic. Sorry for the long ramble but I'll keep y'all posted.
I am hoping you have them in an brooder? They should be in one until about 5 -6 weeks old, it takes that long for them to get used to room temperature. Also they need to be shown where the food dish and water are located. Just tap in the container and they should come to see what the noise is, same with the water. At 1 week you should still have food on the floor of the brooder just to be sure they are all eating enough, or watch to be sure each one is eating from the dish. i hope you little one makes it. good luck. keep us posted

Thanks for the tips all. The lil fella is still doing great. They are in a brooder and do know where the feeding dish and water is. They are just too cute. Every night I will take out the "special" one and have a look at her eye. Clean in if need be. Other than that she is doing great. Keeps up with the other two and eats and drinks like normal as well. They are about 2 weeks old now and they are just growing to fast. We try to handle them once a day and as the days go on they are getting more and more used to us. They will let is pet them now without them trying to dart of our hand. hahaha Ill keep yall posted.

I have trouble raising the babies. They hatch and die. I am worried that I am not using the right kind of waterer. What does everyone else use? Should they be alone or can they brood with bantam chicks? What food? I feed non medicated chick starter.

for the buttons you just use a lid from a jar or other very small shallow dish with marbles in it so the chicks can not fall in and drown or get wet and chilled. I change this water several times a day always washing out the lid. after a week or so you can get them to drink from a chick waterer but still use the marbles around the edges so they don't fall in, changing several times a day to keep the ater fresh as the heat effects the water. I used them until the chicks were about 4 weeks old. I gave the chicks the same crumble that I give to the adults, 20+ protein game bird food that I run through the blender until tiny but not powdered and always offer grit and oyster shell. Do not give "treats" for the first 4 weeks so they will eat the protein rich food. I would not put them in with chicken chicks as they are so much tinier and I would worry about health matters too. Mine did fine in a clear plastic storage container with wire inserts added to the lid for ventilation and a 60 watt bulb hung in the brooder for heat. If you need more details on brooders there are lots of links here and on the web. Hope this helps some. sorry your eggs/chicks have not survived they are a joy to watch grow.
