Hello All,
My name is Lacey and I recently bought two ducklings; each about 8 days old. I have done ALOT of research on them but want to make sure Im doing everything right. I am feeding them gamebird food and have them in a large rubbermade container using wood shavings on the bottom. I use a duck feeder, the water is not deep but seep enough to clear their nose. They are very happy and live to chase after my kids. I have one Khaki Campell(Dash)and one Pekin(Nerf). Oh I also have a heat lamp above one part of the brooder to kep them warm but also so they can move out of the heat if need be.

The couple questions I have are how can I cut down on the smell in my house? I change, wash, dry and clean the brooder daily but come home from work and it is awful.

Another thing is that I change the beddig daily but always seems to be wet and the lay it it. Willl they get sick if it isnt always dry? I know they love to play in it but scared they will get sick laying in damp bedding.

Last question is where to get duck diapers? I want them to hangout around the hoyse without watching their every move to see if they pooped. I have seen a few duckling diaper sites but say not to buy them after they are a week old. I really want to get some though!!

Thanks,
Lacey, Dash and Nerf

! Great to have you in our community! Ducks and smell kind of go hand in hand. Changing the litter regularly of course helps. One thing that might keep them drier (not dry...forget about it) is to elevate their bedding area - I put down some short 2 x 4 pieces and a piece of plywood or paneling over them and bedding on top of that. On the other and lower end of their brooder I have their water & feed. Seems to help a little. Good luck to you!

yep, I understand ducks are much messier and wetter than chickens which is why they shouldn't be penned together. Its the nature of the beast - ducks are made to love water. I don't know if people ever keep ducks on a wire flooring which would keep the pen much drier. Maybe it would damage their feet.

I put a plastic pant with wire over it under their waterer. Then I elevate their bedding section so that it is even to the top of the plastic bucket. It really helps a lot. Ducklings are always going to stink - I haven't found a way to eliminate that. I have found anything I feed game starter to smells more. Louise's Country Closet (on facebook) has nice duck diapers. I usually keep my ducks outside asap.
