I have not been able to find a definitive answer: Are cypress shavings safe for chickens? I have free access to cypress shavings from a shutter-shop here in town. Is it better to just get the pine shavings in the bales?

First time with chickens, have Ameracaunas (Easter Eggers), 4 at 7 weeks old, 4 at 1 week old.

Don't see why not.
Most tree species should be fine. Walnut might need more investigating...but it's expensive so you wouldn't really see it availible.

Who Dat! In Slidell, we are neighbors. Good question! Have read read here that Cedar is not good for the birds respiratory systmem. Never heard anything about cypress. I would think....No problem. I kinda wanna belive some of our Louisiana ancestors put Cypress shavings in their coops a long time ago and the chickens did fine and some really good Jambalaya was made from their meat. Just my opinon.
