What is this? My 12 (ish) week old Buff is so swollen. This started two days ago. She is acting pretty normal, eating and drinking. Any ideas?
Thanks!

It started out of nowhere. I haven't really felt it,except when when I dabbed a it of tee tree oil on it (bad idea?) Poor thing. I do not know if she was vaccinated, and their are no vets around here that are familiar with poultry. I had a chick a few years ago with a bad leg and I took her to the only vet that would take her (specializing in exotic animals-that's what they call them around here!!!). It cost $140 and the guy had no clue. You guys are so much better diagnosticians.

It looks like a tumor to me. Has she been pecked there? Is it soft or firm? Did she have a Mareks vaccine?
She could have very well been pecked there. She has been trying to boss around my EE a bit and the EE is bigger. They free range during the day, and when I put them out, she was fine, when I brought them back she had the lump. It has definitely gotten bigger. Should I get an antibiotic?

As you may know, some respiratory diseases can cause swelling around one eye or the face. Since it could be that, a tumor, an abscess, or swelling from a peck injury, I would rather find out the cause first. They can get swelling from a respiratory disease such as MG without another symptom, or there can be many symptoms such as nasal drainage, rattles, and cough/sneeze. You could try to lance it, and see if you can express any pus (which can be solid in chickens after time,) but if it is firm, it may be a cyst or tumor. There are different antibiotics for respiratorydisease (Tylan 50, Gallimycin) versus a wound abscess(penicillin, amoxicillin, clavamox, cephalexin.) Mareks disease can cause tumors anywhere inside or on the outside of the body. You could also just watch it.

I would try and lance it as it appears red/swollen so could be some sort of infection and it is putting pressure on her eye. Lance and apply antibiotic ointment(nothing ending in caine/cane)ointments designed for sties in eye are my preference for any eye issues and/or clean with a peroxide solution using a Q-tip,be careful of eye.

I agree that it looks like an infection. I am pretty tough, and would normally do it, but since this kind of thing is new to me, I found a vet and will take her this afternoon. I definitely don't want to hurt her or screw it up. (I hope he doesn't either!). I will keep you guys posted as to what the findings are. Thanks so much for the input.

I am so glad you found a vet! I had the same problem as you because I took my girl to many vets but they did't know anything about chickens... But you must try anything to save her and in this case a vet could give you an advice.

I wish you all the best!!

A vet is a great option that many of us don't have. There is always some doubt when there is swelling because of the abscess--tumor--disease scenario, and not knowing whether to lance or not. Any time there is swelling around the eye or near sinuses, it is easy to think respiratory infection, by for some reason your picture doesn't look like the typical MG, coryza, or whatever, and I hope it is just an abscess.
