Da' Cute and Cuddly Call Duck thread!

Oh, I don't care about any of that, sweets! She's perfect as far as I'm concerned. <3

I wish you guys could be here ti see this, Wobbles is FASCINATED with this little thing! He stands on the pillow and cranes his neck to look inside the brooder, and when I put her on my chest to bond a bit, he was right there, checking her out!
I would love to see that. He is so fascinated with the little girl. He has to know she's a duck like him.

Showgirls are typically silkie feathered, but she had regular (smooth) feathers because she only carried 1 silkie gene instead of 2. Puffs is definitely a very spoiled bird, as was Scraps. My son will pick a new baby to spoil once we start hatching this year. He always seems to pick our oddest looking bird...lol

Scovies are just generally way more laid back than other breeds. They are heavier than other breeds but fly really well & perch like chickens.
Yes, I can ship but the only waterfowl left are the pair of pilgrim geese. Lacrystol only lives about half an hour or so from where I am moving from, so she picked the calls up at my place.
The genes are so precise, aren't they? Just one versus two makes a difference. I think it is cute your son picks the oddest looking birds. And so sweet that he loves them, too. Since I had never seen ducks perch before, seeing the scovies do it really bewildered me. You'll have to post photos of 'his' bird once he/she gets here.

He takes his time picking. He always waits for a special 1 to catch his attention. And he really only ever pays attention to "his" chicken. He's a unique child & needs a unique friend to match. (He also makes sure it's a pullet before deciding to get attached. He knows what happens to extra roosters when we get too many.)

Bless him for that. I am touched by his passion and uniqueness. Oh, the roosters. Is it because they are aggressive?

No, we hatch our own birds, so there are always extra roosters growing out that we don't need for breeding. We butcher several times per year to remove the extras & fill the freezer. I keep roos with heavy bodies & gentle temperaments who protect their hens. But there are always extras & always new ones growing out with better potential for breeding, so if a rooster makes it past about 9 months old around here then he has good breeding potential. If he makes it to 18 months he's a very good breeder & if he makes it past 2 years he is awesome. Hens get sold off if they are not what I'm specifically looking for, but I always allow the kids each 1 special hen who gets to stay regardless of her physical qualities as long as she is friendly to people & the rest of the flock.

Heehee. Thanks, Amy. That would be fun to come up with names for her. I have a litany of crazy made up words that I squeal at my birds frequently. Good thing I live alone. One time I had a boyfriend over and I was kissing one of my finches and making all these silly noises and he said, "geez, Julie, that's really sexy." Weebles Wobble but they don't fall down. Perhaps she will be able to teach him to zoom.

I hope she does! Then they'll both be zoomin' <3 Speaking of the lil' stinker, I've never seen a duckling this little be THIS rowdy...she's barely 10 hours old, yet she's already taught herself to jump out of the brooder box! Hils is at Home Depot right now getting a box with higher walls!

I guess I had no real baseline for comparison 'cuz Wobbles was soooo weak when he first came out, but I love how fiesty she is! Her voice is much higher pitched than Wobs' was, too. Odd.

Oh, and we finally came to a mutual decision for the name! Ladies and gents, meet ...Milkshake. <3

Love it. It suits her well. Girls do have a much higher pitched voice so maybe that's a good sign *wink*

That's what I heard, but I don't wanna jump to conclusions 'cuz last time I did that, I wound up with a boy! :p lil' Shakey's doing great, still loves to burrow, hehe. Maybe we should call it Diglett instead.
