Okay. For the past hour she's been more active, flirting with Wobs, even running with her head held down and "Joker Ducking" all over the place. I think I may just be paranoid...although that smell still bugs me. If it gets any worse, emergency vet trip, I don't care if it costs an extra $200.

Ugh, sorry guys, it's just, seeing her with her head dropped on the lip of her water bowl like that brought back some rough memories. That's just how she would sit when she nearly died, and seeing her like that again, I just burst into tears on the spot! I'm still sniveling a bit...

But seriously, have any of you smelled soy sauce on your duck's breath before?

Don't apologize Amykins. I completely understand how you feel. These birds are family and a lot like kids to us. I'm glad she's perking up. I can imagine after all you have been through with Bean already you would be on high alert. Please keep us updated on her! My ducks breath doesn't have any odor, at least that I'm aware of... Just tell Bean to feel better and not to scare her mama!!!

Don't apologize Amykins. I completely understand how you feel. These birds are family and a lot like kids to us. I'm glad she's perking up. I can imagine after all you have been through with Bean already you would be on high alert. Please keep us updated on her! My ducks breath doesn't have any odor, at least that I'm aware of... Just tell Bean to feel better and not to scare her mama!!!

Wobbles' breath doesn't have any odor, either. I'm fairly certain she's got the early stages of sour crop. The vet is closed now (grr) but I'm leaving a message as I type this to see when I can bring her in. Money's been supremely tight, but...I can't NOT take her. This stuff can get real nasty, real fast.

I'd take her, but not as an emergency visit since you don't have to. She doesn't sound like she's in imminent danger.

if i were you my vet told me that a way to help treat the crop disease is by putting 1 tabel spoon of baking soda in a liter of water.and that might help a bit.

A bicarbonate of soda, that's cute. I dunno though, wouldn't that make her feel uncomfortable? I guess I can try it but I'm a bit scared to. Amiga suggested coconut oil as well. I've got that, at least.

I'm relieved to hear she has an appointment for tomorrow. I know nothing about sour crop in ducks or what on earth causes it. Of course now I need to research. I hope the vet figures it out tomorrow and it's easily treatable. How has she been this evening? At least she's eating, drinking, and pooping which I know are all really good. Give my love to little Bean.

Hehe that's awesome to hear that my theory is correct. All the white calls I've seen act so silly and pekin-like.

None of my ducks have any smell to their breath unless they JUST ate something, then it usually smells like meal worms or poop. (Has anyone else noticed dried meal worms smell kind of like peanut butter?). I flip all my ducks every week to check their feet and most of them set their bills against my cheek and under my nose so their exhaled breath goes right out of their nares and up my nose. Now I know that air doesn't come from their crop, but I am sure if there was anything more than the faintest odor coming from their crops, I would smell that too.

Saturday is probably fine if you don't notice anything else (I know you will be watching for every little thing), but if the soy sauce breath stays, I would definitely take her in.
