9 of my Welsh harlequin eggs hatched yesterday and the mommas been pretty protective, which is understandable, but when she brought them out of the nesting spot the daddy duck picked one up and shook it before throwing it down. I ran over and got him before he could do it again but now I'm afraid he might try to do it again, is there any reason he has done this. The whole time she's been sitting on them he chases stuff off (even us) which is why I'm confused he was mean.

SEPERATE THEM!!! The drakes will KILL the babies and then you'll come out and find mauled ducklings! It's horrible, but I think the males get jealous of the females lack of attention to them, so they kill the babes.

Okay, I have had them separated since he did that. I relocated her to a kennel bc not only did he do that a blue jay was after the babies as was one of the neighbor hood cats. Thanks for the response

Oh, also, baby ducks can't float by themselves. Their mama has to be IN the water with them, because she gives them special oils to keep afloat. Otherwise, they'll drown.

I wondered how they stayed afloat that young. She keeps trying to get them in right now but they don't understand haha, they're super cute.
