Good dog!

If you want a really tough durable toy, the Chuckit Ultra balls are almost indestructible.

I'll remember that. For now he's not allowed loose in the back yard, we're working on recall.

I was sitting in my recliner just now, contemplating going to bed, when I thought I heard one of my roosters crowing. I went to the door, opened it to hear better. Yes, one of them, sounded like Silas, was crowing over and over and over.

I slid on a jacket and my mud shoes, put on my headlamp, and headed out to the coops. First I stood outside Silas' coop. All quiet. Hmm. Walked back to the first coop and then heard some fussy noises behind me. I opened Silas' coop, saw Esther pecking one of the game pullets, hard. The pullet had wedged herself under Silas as if he were a broody, probably trying to escape! So I played Chicken Tetris, moved the pullet to the other side of Silas so Esther will have a harder time reaching anyone.

I wonder, was Silas crowing repeatedly in annoyance, frustration, or perhaps asking for intervention?

ENC's forecast is for extreme cold, for us, 15°F. I removed the remaining hose, did the best I could to insulate the faucet.

Maybe I'll wrap it with an old towel or t-shirt to cover the gap. The foam covers fit great on the other two outside faucets.

I'm afraid I'll be losing most of my remaining crops, blast it! It doesn't get this cold very often, and not usually until January.

Outside/feral cats have foam shelters with dry straw.

My chickens have dry and sheltered roosts, they'll just need to get over their quarrels so they can huddle together.

Oh, and Esther decided to start molting!

Thanks for the reminder!! 11°F (-11-12°C) forecast here. We’ll attend to hoses and faucets tomorrow.

I thought you had retired

I think a towel or something to fill in the gap should be fine. I use those covers and they seem to work well.
I hope you don't lose your crops, hopefully with covers on them they will survive.

LOL Well, it's not winter yet, so Esther is going through a Fall Molt. I've had a few that had hard molts in the middle of January, they were nekked. I felt bad for them, but they did o.k. (with shelter, wind blocking and extra bedding to snuggle into on windy days).

How is Caleb doing? Settling in just fine I hope.

I know this cold "blast" is only going to be a couple of days it seems, then a little warm up, but I'm not looking forward to it. Wind. Always Wind.. Brrr!

I too was wishing for a Caleb update
My chickens have started a molt as well. Go figure - their little internal clocks seem quite oblivious to the frigid weather. Too bad we can’t cinch a styrofoam protector on all molting chickens as we do the faucets!

Sharing a pic of my little Bindi girl. She turned 19 on October 9 of this year, born 2006. Had to take her in late yesterday and call time on a good long life. She had nary a gray hair on her. I miss her she sure was a good friend!


Please give Caleb an extra pet from me they sure are special, faithful little critters, dogs.

I'm still working, just not getting paid

Caleb is improving, settling in for the most part. He still is triggered by kitties, but is less reactive.
