Then I calcualted the amount of 2x4's, plywood, treated lumber (foundation) I would need and went to Lowes.....picked out a window when there...looked at the vents and decided to use heat registers so I could close/open them easily....

We came home and jr and I started cutting and hammering.....using my minds eye (as they say) as a guide...

It's a pretty basic design....flat roof etc....

I started the siding yesterday and that was a little frustrating....I have a one y/o girl, a six y/o girl, and my son (5 on this past tues) and the cabin fever was released this week...bumps, bruises, cuts, and two hammered fingers, while I'm trying to measure and cut the shakes

....

I could have done it eaiser and cheaper but the left over wrap etc will be used on another project.....I promised my kids a play house with bulit in bunks (3) and table etc...front porch...should be neat....and now that we know we can do this stuff it'll be fun to build

Mr. Dad, Ive been following your trials and tribulations. I'm so glad things are working out for you, kids and your hen. BTW, what is your hen's name? When I have to upgrade my coop, I'm gonna try to make it look like that! It's lovely.

Man what a story huh?...LOL......I swear it's all true and I swear plenty of times I figured some people must think I'm a troll or nutz....or both LOL......I still miss that darn rooster.....

Luna... the hen in the pics name is Decker.....we named her that because we were planning to move and found the house of our dreams on Decker Rd.....long story short we can't move right now because my wife got a heads up that her job (office location) is not certain by years end, so we decided not to move further away from the job market....bummer....but things can always be worse.......

Foghorn ...you know what it takes, thanks...you're doing a really nice job yourself.....it's been a learning experience....I have a fair amount of the siding done but need to take a new pic or two.....the past few day's I've been working on our Travel Trailer (camping season is here) and haven't done much on the coop, kinda needed a short break anyway.....

The chickens are a new but nice/welcome thing for me......I got hurt and was 'retired' (involuntarily) two years ago.....since then I've done some kool things with my kids (we camp a lot more now that I have such quality time with them)...but my dogs passsed away shortly before that 'retirement' happened and we've been petless since......we've (I've anyway...LOL) talked about chickens but life has gone on with-out really looking into what it takes to keep them......you guys (meaning you two and everyone here on the site) know chickens are much more then 'chickens' if that makes sense......Decker (the remaining 'lost and found') and her buds taught me that chickens are pets too......

BTW.......I should mention 'Little Red'...that's what we named her buddy...a RIR we picked up about 3 weeks ago....great bird....great company for Decker....and she's now laying everyday which is a real bonus.......I'll get a few pics of her next time I'm waving the camera around......

Your coop is awesome - your chicks will appreciate the craftsmanship. Thank you for your reply on my plastic shed. Unfortunately, with the snow we are getting and cold weather I won't be able to assemble it this weekend.

Mr. Dad, that is awesome! I have been wanting a new coop, but just can't justify it right now. Maybe this year sometime. I would like to have one like yours.

BTW - Does that hen actually drink the Guinness? That is my favorite brew.

What sort of flexible flashing material did you use for the hinged roof over the nests? I have a hinged roof on the coop I'm building, and had a piece of sheet rubber I was planning on cutting down to use. However, when we got to looking at it, we realized it actually had steel belts running through it (which would not be kind to our blades, to say the least, if it could even be cut by the tools we have).

Now I'm trying to figure out how to buy a small piece of something that will weather well without having to buy a 300 yard roll...
