Daily Duck Egg Report for 2015

I have no idea. I have just seen black Cayuga eggs on the web and Pocahontas' first eggs were completely black on one side then stippled to white on the other side and the black slowly faded to battleship grey, then disappeared so that it was a fully white egg. That was last fall and is my only personal experience and I only have one Cayuga so I don't know if that is normal all the time or one possible outcome. I have seen (on the net) green Cayuga eggs too but the only green eggs I get are from my Black,Blue and Chocolate Runners. (The Faun & White lays white eggs).

I have 14 Cayuga females. Typically they will start out their first year laying a dark grey to almost black egg. Eggs laid after those first few will be lighter until they are white like a typical duck egg. The grey can often be seen as a green due to the off white shade of the egg under the coating. And, it is just that, a coating, the shell is not actually black, you can scrub most of it off.

In their second season they will sometimes lay grey eggs but usually, after the first few black ones, they just lay ordinary white eggs.

Thank you for the info! So I guess it is just their magic sealant that is black

I guess I got that wrong. I must have read that the eggs lightened up and thought it was for the season, not the life of the duck. I also thought I would have a couple months with no eggs that would make for definite season start and end days, and that was never the case I had a couple days down to 2 or 3 eggs with my mix but no goose egg duck egg days

I will probably get that next winter when they are older.

I got my first duck egg in two months! It had no shell so I put out some oyter shell. I opened up the egg to see if it was fertile and its egg white was yellow and the yolk was a hard substance??

If it didn't have a shell, what consistancy did it come out like? Was it like a runny poop/blob?

Peek is starting to hide her eggs. Poke still lays in the duck house with the golf balls, but Peek makes a new nest every day in the straw piles I have out in the run. I take the egg, she makes a new nest in a different place. She does not approve of my egg-stealing ways.
