Daily Duck Egg Report

I'm getting three eggs per day now from three ducks (one egg each) ... two weeks now. YUM!!!

We are getting about seven eggs per day from our nine hens but the dummies are laying the eggs in the creek. We go down to feed them in the morning and there they are in about four inches of spring creek water. What are the chances of these eggs being hatchable? A lot of them are cracked and sometimes they will crack while they warm up in our hand, obviously those will not hatch but the good ones?

If you'll feed them at their house or run and not let them out till around 8-9 am they should lay in their house. Once they have been laying in water I doubt their any good for hatching or eating.

Thank you Miss Lydia, our ducks do not have a house or a run, they are free range ducks and have the full run of the creek. We have found a nest that they frequent but it looks like they also kick the eggs out and down they roll into the creek.

We are trying to get to the eggs before they get too cold from the water, hopefully they warmer days and water temps will allow for a few more of them to be viable.

One of my Runners is setting! She's the 1st of 9 to show any maternal urges (they are 16 months old). I am reading of mixed experiences: separate her from the others, separate her from the drakes (3), when to separate her, leave her be . . . this is day 1 so I'm preparing a separate area for her to raise the ducklings safely from the other ducks. Is this usually needed? From what I gather, Runners are not the most protective moms. Assuming she hatches some babies, how long will they need to be separated from the rest of the flock? If I give them mash instead of poultry pellets, won't Mom eat it all 1st? I don't know how many eggs are under her - I don't want to disturb her but at some point I'll have to check their viability. Should she have water and food close to her or will she go to the watering and feeding stations enough to meet her needs? I'm kind of excited but mostly anxious at this point. Advice appreciated. I'm reading Storey's Guide to Raising Ducks but still have questions. Thanks
