Daily Duck Egg Report

Okay, I have five hens of laying age and have gotten no eggs. I'm in east Texas and the suckers are molting!! They did that last fall! (Actually started in like July gave me some eggs in feb.... Then began to slow up and now none! Even the drakes are starting to molt what gives?!

I have no idea, my Muscovy's molt big time in the fall, they may do mini molts through out the year but it's not noticeable, once they finish their molt they will begin to lay again though so try to be patient. What breed/breeds do you have? maybe someone with same breed might be seeing the same thing.

These guys are all at least two years old(some two and a half) and I'm used to the minimolts but this is full blow like they did in the fall. I have Perkins, Cayuga and Welsh harliquins and all breeds are doing it. I barely have any duck eggs this year and the last year I was nearly over run with them! I have some very ticked off customers!(plus me too I prefer duck eggs.

I wish I knew the answer but try adding some high quality cat kibble to their diet and see if it gets them into feather faster and that will bring on the egg laying. And you know as they get older they will slow down a bit in the egg laying department. But I wouldn't write them off yet.

I ended up taking the eggs from Regina - She was tossing eggs on the floor and letting the pekins lay in there...Im sure she didnt lay any herself. Getting about 2 a day. Winters certainly come here so it wont be for much longer, I think.

Even though there are no eggs, Regina is still broody. She is one nutty duck.

I really don't think it matters if they have eggs or not, it just has to run it's course. I have one that's been broody going on 3 months now. She's probably wondering how come her fake goose egg hasn't hatched yet but she is very protective of it.

I know they slow down but the oldest ones are just two. I have friends with ducks that are six and still laying though less.... I don't add lights so it's not like I'm forcing them to over produce. I've just never had ducks molt like this in Spring (especially when they had a full moot just a few months ago.)

That is unusual, anything out of norm happening to maybe stress them? I have 2 ducks just turned 7yrs and they are still laying have 2 going on 10 yrs in July still lay an egg every once in a while.

Not that I can think of... I was hoping I'd just somehow missed hearing that they occasionally molt in spring (I think only one drake hasn't molted) let's hope they finish quick and skip it this fall!
