Hey friends. I lost one of my baby chicks yesterday about 12 weeks killed and taken by something probably a hawk but when I went to check my other babies I found my sapphire gem on her back going in circles. I picked her up and saw her wing was hanging and she does have damage to it. So maybe she was protecting the other baby when it happened. I have attached pics.
I am going to try to sling her with some gauze and have cleaned her with a antibiotic natural spray for chickens. But is there anything else I need to do? I have her contained in a separate pen in the coop so she won’t get picked on and stays safe but This is my first injury with a bird still alive after it. I have also cut back her feathers bc she kept stepping on it. Her claw keeps going through it so I think I’m going to try to sling it ?? Any suggestions or help would be helpful. Thank you

Check for a break, I think it maybe broken somewhere above the wrist?

A vet is best if her wing is broken. Get some chlorhexidene 2% at your drug or feed store to spray on the wound. If skin is broken or bone is broken, that can be a serious infection that a natural spray won’t help. Is there any evidence that the bone is coming through the skin? If there is, she would need antibiotics. This link has good pictures of the bones and splinting on pp 10-12:

I don't want to discourage you but if the wing is broken at the shoulder or along the main bone that runs down the wing you'll need to watch out for lung problems as well. You need to be really carefull to make sure infection doesn't set in and spread to the lungs. Some of the wing bones are pneumatic.
It's a vet job.

How exactly do I know if it’s broken. I don’t have a chicken vet. It does hang down pretty low so I do think it’s broken. I aligned it last night and she’s up and around today a little tired but chipper and not falling over. Thank you

Thank you. Guess I gotta find a chicken bet then.

Shock. Everyone forgets about shock. Treat for it. It can be life threatening. It's as simple as giving her a bowl of tepid Gatoraid to drink. She should have this for the day following the attack.
Thank you I’ll get on it

You have to feel for a break. It requires moving the area, or slightly pressing. A break would have a rough move, or abnormal feel to it.
