Dang Crazy Hen....Nugget is REALLY Broody (BABY PICS! Three of 3 Out)

Monday is Day 16 for Nugget. She's doing great, but boy it was hot today! She was panting for the first time. Those little chickies must be really hot to sit on. Anyway, next Friday/Saturday is the hatch. Friday is Day 20. Seems most start pipping then, even most of the slowpoke Orps.

BTW, these three Suede babies will go live with Cetawin in Kentucky when Nugget gets sick of them, probably about 7-8 weeks old.

Wednesday is Day 18 for Nugget and her three eggs. I bet they're starting to move underneath her now. Getting to Day 18 is like being in the military--hurry up and wait! LOL. So here I am, waiting....

I have a BO who went broody twice last year....she was a very good momma. I thought for sure she (or someone else in the coop) would go broody right away this spring, but no...had to let some eggs pile up in the nests to tempt someone into going broody. Sure enough, one of my youngest hens got the urge and is setting on some brown and blue/green EE eggs now. Only problem...this little broody REALLY doesn't like to be messed with....she pecks HARD!

Gotta love broodies though...they make raising chicks a whole lot easier.

Well mine have started hatching,, two days early in the bator in class,,, and early here too! Red, the RIR has several little tiny Banties tucked under her,, along with her bigger eggs,, so she stole babies from one of the others I think!

Hi Cynthia, My Luna, also a buff orpington, is a first time broody and just hatched 2 little sweeties yesterday! Its my first time too, and I am so excited. Nugget seems really intense, like Luna. I had to take her off the nest 2x daily, to eat, drink and poop (nasty poops they were too!)

Keeping my fingers crossed for you

Val

Congrats, Val! Nugget is so odd. She comes out, drinks, takes a few bite, then proceeds to cackle like she just laid an egg--what the heck it up with that? She keeps on and on, all the while trying to eat, silly girl. None of my other broodies do that. Thursday is Day 19. We should have babies by sometime Saturday, but more likely at least one or two on Friday.

Kate, that's funny about the hen stealing other babies. I wonder why none of my other broody-type hens are not going broody this year. Dusty, one of the blue Orps, brooded two sets of chicks last year, two months apart.

Well, we will be watching and waiting with you.

These broodies can be so funny, the sounds they make, and all that poofiness! For me, the 21 days seemed to go quickly though. My Luna is still be good with me, letting me move her and the chicks to a slightly different location in the coop.

It's early yet, still Day 19. I expect pips by sometime midday tomorrow. It's so hot today! Poor Nuggers. At least she doesn't have a dozen eggs under her and I have a fan blowing toward the broody pen.
