Help! I went to lock in our birds tonight and I noticed our 2.5 month old chick must have gotten herself caught somewhere, possibly in the door at some point. Her toe is completely dangling by what I would assume to be a vein? There's a lump higher up where I'm assuming it clotted because there's no sign of blood. Guessing this happened days ago without us noticing. No heat to it, but I'm concerned about infection! What can I do for her? She doesn't seem to be suffering.

It sounds like the first thing you should do is to clip off whatever tissue is still connected to the toe. It's going to be tough to keep clean since it's on her foot, but you should still try and clean it thoroughly and regularly. You could always try some antibiotics to head off an infection if you are still concerned. Photos would help.

Things like this happen, but you should also check around to see if you can figure out how this happened and try to prevent any other chickens from getting caught. Good luck to your chick!

Thank you! I'm worried her toe got closed in the door without anyone realizing it. I will try to get some photos tomorrow.

What kind of door? Is she a free roamer? I’m wondering how this could have happened. I’m sure it wasn’t your fault, and I hope she’s going to be alright

It's a wooden door on a homemade coop. My husband usually puts the chickens in at night- they have an enclosed but not night time secure pen. He said he really tries to watch out for their feet because he's noticed sometimes they just like to stand there when he's trying to close it. There are so many birds and she is little so it easily could have been either one of us :( I feel so bad!

I was thinking we could add a wooden piece to the floor of the coop to match up with the door to avoid this.
