d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

Well we finally got our coop finished and put the babies outside. Had them in it for almost a week before we got the run completed and now they love their new playpen! So much they will not go in at night so I tried herding them in but they only like to go down the ramp aperantly and not up

Oh well I'll just have to corner them with a board and put them in myself but better safe than sorry, and they will learn, hopefully soon

Anyway, I believe to have four boys in the bunch Aubrey! One Dun Quail and three Porcelains. I will be posting some new pics soon. I just love them to pieces, especially the Quail

Na, it' can be hard on the dun quail as with all dun the only difference is the normal black feathers are replaced with chocolate ones
it's very easy to see on the hens, see how brown their rear is, all that would be black like it is in the top pics if it were a normal quail, solid black tail and black lacing on the back.
the roos is hard to see it on though, he only has one copy of dun in him and it allowed some of the tail to come out black still, with 2 copies you'll have all chocolate like the hens show. But look at his hackle, wings, and inner tail feathers, all are chocolate not black, kinda hard to tell cause he was in the barn in quarantine from shipping under fluorescent lights when I took that pic and the flash shined him up too so makes some of the dark chocolate ones look sorta black in the pic too.

here's an old juck pi my wife took while I was cleaning out pens one day, not the best pic, but it shows the color difference a little better, notice there's no black on him at all, all the black areas are chocolate brown to a smokey grey

here's a group of solids
note how dun can come in various shades, depending on number of genes carried by the bird

black no dun

black mottled/ dun cross (darker bird) shows a little dun, as he just has 1 copy
lighter smokey one is a smokey dun, 2 copies made off dun to dun quail, still shows a little quial in the wing bow

second generation dun hen, came from both parents carring double copies of dun
note how she's solid chocolate now, basically a double factored dun from both double fatcored parents

Dang, that is really subtle except in that last hen, but I think I see what you mean. That's really easy to miss!

I am completely in love with these little ones. This is my Penny. She is the most precious little girl, my best buddy in that coop other than the BR cockerel. She must be on my lap or in my hand and snuggling with me every second I'm in the pen with them. Such a love!

yep I love them too. and the khakis they make are gorgeous, a cream version quail. I had several from last years hatch but lost them all at about 4-6 weeks when the brooder light went out in a bad storm, made me sick, but do have more going now from this years hatch, hope to have some pics to post this fall finally

Took pics of Rufus, Aubrey and Aimee today. They are 8 weeks old. The other porcelain, Angus, looks as if he may be at the bottom of the pecking order. He's smaller than the other males at this point.
