d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

Laura Lee didn't you promise pictures?

Aubrey- this evening I put a pullet in a pen with a young cock bird and they just wanted to fight. Then I turn the lights out and they are roosting togeather. Is the fighting between six month old pullets and cockrels normal?

jj

yep, with any breed too. Just had some ohiki, sumatra and phoenix do the same thing this weekend when I moved some breeding pens around. They'll all get a dominance thing that has to be sorted out. Usually adult hens are only bad you new younger pullets, but juvenile birds dont care what sex you are. Some never do a thing, others fight a bit, but it's usually minor, and like you said when the lights go out, they are all body heat buddies and will be fine the next morning

JJ, I'll get on that asap, been making the fudges getting ready for christmas, still got the peanut butter roll & Christmas cake to go tomorrow. If I can get "Elly Mae" in there to help me out, been waiting on her to get them out of the cages, so I can take them. She gets that little rooster out all the time, but never when I can get a pic of him. She's making a wimp outta my big rooster!!

But will get them on here soon. Promise.

Good luck with making a wimp out of him. From what I have seen the ones that are the nicest and tamest when they are young turn into the ones you can't take your eye off of when they get older. But I will be watching for the pictures.

So is the reverse a guarantee...if the roo is testy when young, he will settle down?

haha NOPE! they usually just get grumpier.

Look forward to some new pics LL

I havent forgot about mine either, just been swamped with new birds to get settled in, work, Christmas stuff, and nasty weather about every time I have a minute to do it.
Want to get some good new ones so I can update the ol website too with them

The pullets I got from Ideal are the mean ones out of that bunch. Everyone of them will stand there ground and peck repeatedly any hand that reaches for them.

Aubrey- My bb red cockrel is about 5 months old now and he is going to be the fiestiest one I have and not too long ago he flew up on my arm every chance he got. I guess he is still doing that but he does more than just set there now-- he's a biter, then after that he will flop ya for good measure.

OK JJ, you asked for it....

yep for hatchery birds, they both look pretty good. The hen looks best of all of them, good color and nice beard. Their combs are the only thing I dont like. When they are tiny like that, it's usually a sign they have single comb genetics in them. Most likely will produce some single combed chicks on you from time to time. But other than that...not bad at all for hatchery stock. The male has a nice darker color, not totally yellow looking like a lot of them I have seen.
Keep on posting the pics, looking forward to seeing the others at that age!

Laura Lee nice pic's. Aubrey you are right about the single combs. I got proof.

These are the ones I kept for my blue quail project. I will cross them with quail with good type an color then go from there.
