Off work today can you tell?

Aubrey I have a 5 month old millie that I hatched last summer, I think he is looking pretty good but just wanted to get your opinion.

His tails not grown all the way back yet and he is not showing much mottling in the hackle buy hopefully time will fix that.

If I'm not back on here before then, I want to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas, and the most wonderful New Year!!!

Have a great day all!!!

merry Christmas to all yall too.

Yep JJ usually when you see birds where even the males have those small little combs, It's a sign of single combed birds having been used in them. Ideals d'anvers all have it seems like. You can still get good birds if you breed them over higher quality birds with good rose combs though like you plan to do. My red pyles were done this way. Had to outcross to old english to get the color, but the first generations were all those small combs. This year ( the second cross back to my bb reds) Type is really nice, very few single combed, and the rose combed ones are bigger combed. 1-2 more years I should have them done. Then can pass these project birds on to someone else who want to work with dominate white based birds.

Yep the other birds you posted are looking good too. Yes the mille looks good, but could use a bit more mottling for sure. a good hen will help with that. Some times on the hackle and saddles it take til their second molt to get them, so dont give up on that yet. Also, often it's not much because it's just the tip of the feather that gets it, so on those thin long feathers, it can be right, just doesnt look like much, same with these long tailed breeds I'm working on just even more so. Type wise, he's pretty good, wouldnt be a show stopper but has potential to make you some nice birds if you get a good hen for him. Thing with them, there's just not many at all to pick from, so any time you get a mille or porcelain, their good birds and you should be proud of them, there's just a small handful of us with them to start with....

oh, That tail aint full yet thing, That's one that's been holding me up too on picture taking. I like to wait til they are full and have those 2 nice long center feathers sticking out.
Shouldnt be much longer most are there now...just need that and some good sunny days

Here are some quail cockrels I kept because I wanted to see how they would turn out. I like the dark hackles and the laced back. They are 8 weeks old now, I kept three of them.

Merry Christmas to everybody and have a safe holiday.

Aubrey- I hear you about millies and porcelains being hard to find. Around here everything is hard to find unless you are looking for white, black, self blue or quail. I guess the shows drive the supply and those colors have the fewest possible faults. Any way I have been looking for millies all year and have amassed two roosters and three hens. The two pullets I got from Tom Shepard look pretty good and I was going to put them with the rooster I posted yesterday. I also have one of those light colored hens (lot of white, buff under fluff) That I was thinking of putting with my porcelain roo. My porcelain hen I was going to pair with a dark millie roo from Tom Shepard. That would give me two pens of millie split to lav that I could either make millies or porcelains out of later. Does this make sense or should I do it different?

Since I haven't posted pics in a bit, got some for you guys. Rufus and Rusty had another little blow-out today, but again, Rufus backed Rusty down. Just wanted you to see how their plumage is coming along.
