d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

Aubrey- I have a self-blue pullet that tried to lay an egg that was as big as a large fowl pullet. It wasn't going to happen. Had to break it and get it out of her. Could this be a fluke or will it most likely happen again?

I sure hope that never happens again! Poor girl!

New pics of the "chicken nuggets" including the one tainted with "toerag genetics" (don't ya love that new term we coined, LOL?). Well, the male nuggets anyway, not the girls, who were busy in the nests, removing the hay.

Whatever do you mean, "poor little fellers", Aubrey? Am I abusing or neglecting the little nuggets in some horrible way?

Btw, that is your namesake in the last picture. Angus was off in the back corner in the second picture.

That's cool to hear. If you dont mind me asking, what are you going to outcross with to introduce dominate white into them? I have seen these in Belguim before.
Had considered making some myself, already have dominate white going on a couple of crosses, but wanted to wait til the current project was complete. That way I could just use pure d'anvers to continue with dominate white based projects. Want to do it to my buff columbians too for basically a white tailed buff.

I have also seen lavender based quail before from Europe which look awesome. Plan to work on them soon too. Basicly they look porcelain body colored with a pale blue tail... pretty nice. Good luck on the white quail project. If you need any advice, feel free to ask!

Well, I was thinking of using Red Pyle OEGBs. Now, before you start laughing

(I know it's an odd breed to outcross d'Anvers to
lau.gif
) , here's how I plan to do it...
- RPOEGB + Quail d'Anver
= 100% incomplete White Quail progeny

- Backcross the progeny with other Quail d'Anvers.
= this will give me largely White Quails, which is good, because I'll need to 'un-OEG' them.

Another project I plan to try, is cross Creles (OEGBs again) with Quails to get Gold Tiger-Barred. My friend bred the original Tiger-Barred (red groundcolored, though) in Turkens. It is Duckwing + Columbian + Barred + Melanotic. So it's basically Barred Quail. But it doesn't look like it would be Barred Quail. It looks like a Barred Buff bird with black stripes alongside the barring. Breeding these would basically be the same as the White Quails.

no not crazy at all, It's the same breed I use in my outcrosses, did it with my pyles and working it with my laced now.

Yep, your F1's should be 1/2 white and 1/2 normal incomplete quail.
One back breeding to solidify the color, then just continue to back cross to quail til type is right again.
Doesnt take long, 4 years of back crosses should make some excellet looking birds.
Mt pyles are f2 now and looking decent, good patterning and color, mostly correct body, still get a few single combs but rose comb does away with that pretty quick.

Good luck on them all.

Good to know. I've had OEGBs already (well, who hasn't had OEGs
tongue.png
), but I haven't had d'Anvers (getting chicks this spring), so I don't know how the size compares (I imagine similar to d'Uccles and Watermaals), but I know that alot of type/comb/facial aspects are different between the two. I suppose OEGBs are the best breed in the world to use for introducing colors, because they are already available in every imaginable color!

Yes, your namesake is as adorable as you are!

Rufus is a great little leader, I have to tell you. Today, one of the others, didn't see which, had Penny by the head feathers and she was screaming her head off, then another tried to get in on the action. Rufus to the rescue! He swooped in, body-slammed one off her, then went after the other one. When Aubrey challenged Rusty and they were having a tiff, Rufus broke it up, then pushed Rusty back against the fence. There is NO question who is in charge in that pen! I don't see him doing much of the mating, though, which is interesting. He usually rescues the girls from the other three. Maybe because they aren't even laying yet and he knows it?

My poor banty Cochin started laying again yesterday after a 7 month hiatus (she is about to turn 4)--that got the very amorous attention of all the little guys in that coop, who were after her with a vengeance. She kept trying to hide behind my big Buff Orp hen. Used to have three standard hens for her to hide behind, but I moved Nugget to another coop and poor old Reba died a month ago. When Sunny passes on, and she's six now, Shadow may have to pay the piper, LOL.
