d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

ah Ok I couldnt remember what all you ended up with. Yes everything you got from me breeds true if bred together, so if you can seperate those silvers, all you'll get from them will be silvers

Hi, guys. I have a pair of d'Anvers that I'm entering in a show in March. Their feather condition is a bit on the rough side right now. (I would not enter them except that they are my 8 year old's birds) Is there anything I can do to help improve their feathers over the next month?

I feed them Gamebird chow and give some kibble dog food as treats. I have mixed in some seeds that contain vitamin A this last week but I'm out at the moment.

I removed Rusty and Rufus from the bantam coop and put them in the broody pen (which is in the Orp coop, underneath my crippled rooster, Zane's cage). It's about 31/2 x 5' so plenty of room for them. I got tired of a flogging chicken nugget on each ankle and my poor banty Cochin had a bloody comb yesterday from all four D'Anvers trying to mate her at once, now that she is squatting for them.

Today, it was so nice to go in the bantam coop and have Aubrey and Angus take pieces of biscuit from my hand like gentlemen. No craziness at roost time, very peaceful in there without the matching bookends, Rusty and Rufus. Maybe keeping them out of that coop for a couple of days will teach them a lesson, especially if Angus and Aubrey do some butt-kicking when they return.

Here are a few pictures of Aubrey and Angus. Tried pics of the pullets, but they are right in the camera every time, so it's tough. There was another rather indelicate picture that involved my banty Cochin, but we'll leave off the chicken porn for now. At least she only had to contend with one at a time today. Ahhh, so much nicer with just the porcelain boys in there!

sounds like your feed should be good. Good clean and dry pens are a must for excellent feather condition. One thing we do with longtails is take a little mineral oil on a soft cloth and apply it to the long feathers they cant reach. If yours a dry and ruff looking, this will help clean them up a good bit. Dont over do it, just a slight oiling is all they need. Do it til they look better. If they are totally damaged, broken, and ratty, a molt is all that will help though. If you plan to show a lot. It is crucial to take the birds you plan to use , pen them separate, preferably off the ground and in good cages. This helps a ton, also thick shavings for the bedding to keep poop off them and such.

It can be a chore to raise show birds due to all the babying they take to keep them in tip top perfect condition.... we all know they arent the cleanest critters on Earth

Oh, yeah, they're fertile, all right! Poor little Aimee has a reverse mohawk hairdo from all the "attention" she gets from those boys. I think Angus and Aubrey are handsome little guys, for sure! Just wish I had some pretty little porcelain hens, too, but I'm still vacillating back and forth on getting any eggs right now. I will be starting the incubation around the 11-12th of Feb so the window is closing for me to decide for certain. I can't believe I'm having such a hard time making up my mind about a few little eggs. I'm so sorry, Aubrey! If someone else claims what you have, no worries.
