Just took some new pics of my d'anver quail pullet, Olive.... Last time I posted, she was so wild. Now, she allows me to pick her up and do showmanship with her! I'm SO happy. She still needs a little help with posing, but that'll just take some time! She hasn't learned the upside down thing yet....I'm sure she'll freak out after that!

New to D'anvers myself and I have some questions...go figure!

First, my daughter got two pair of Mille D'anvers two weeks ago, and when we got them home and gave them a good once over, we found they were infested with body lice. Well, the second treatment went on Monday evening to get rid of them and seems to be working well......the birds have great appetites(sp?) and are very active but have starting molting heavily.

Now, I'm used to birds that don't molt all at once, so I need some advice/guidance on this. I am assuming that the molt is either due to the lice and or treatment thereof, or the fact that they are now in a temperature controlled environment...i.e. my basement chicken room for quarantine and the cooler temperatures have thrown them into a fall molt early. Either way I don't mind since their feathers looked so rough from the lice and general conditions they were kept in before finding their way home with us.

So I guess the question is, how long will this process take? She wanted to take one of the roos to the Ohio Nationals for the youth show, but I don't know how he will look in November?

I'm sure the lice didnt help things, a little Ivermectin will clean that right up and quick too if what you are using is too slow, they will definitely do a number of their plumage for sure. Shouldnt effect their appetite though, so you should be good there.
I'd give them a little wormer too if you havent. If they were allowed to get covered in lice, they probably havent been wormed regularly either. Ivermectin or Safeguard is great for either. Give Ivermectin orally or drench down the back. Safeguard can be put in the water if mixed heavily, but over time it will fall out of solution too.
Hope that helps. and congrats of them, the millies are one of the tuffer ones to find, though Ohio is about the most breeder populated state out there!

Nice pics, she's coming along. Yep with time, the d'anver , hens especially, love to be handled and pose for the camera. They are some my most photogenic breeds I have.
Even the roos, though a lot of them arent big on being held, LOL

Thanks! I don't think she'll ever be that close to being SQ, but she's still very nice and pretty.... I've heard the males are often very mean!

na, she wont make show quality, lacking a bit for that, but still nice.
As for the males, hah
They come in two types, puppy dogs, or rattle snakes

Mainly, they are very territorial and protective of their hens is what they are doing. I have some pens that they will try me in every time I go in. A little bump of the foot and scoot them out of the way and your fine. At 25 onces or so, they cant do too much damage, would hate to see a 5 pound one though
