pint sized pizzaz!

Aubrey is right about them getting along better than most other roosters in a pen with hens. The top dog would break up any fights that started before they became bloodbaths and the others would rarely try to take on the top man. That was Rufus until he went to live in KY with Cetawin.

Aubrey, my porcelain male, is now the only rooster in there and he has become way less inclined to fuss with me. Could be his age or maturity, not sure. I hope it's not because he's feeling badly! All his hens keep going broody, so 3 of his 6 are on nests right now. That may be depressing him, LOL. I told him he was a good boy today--that should tell you how much he's calmed down!

yep Cynthia,

I havent ever mentioned anything about that, wasnt sure if it was mine or just a fluke or what. But I have noticed the first breeding season, they tend to be their grumpiest, after that some of them here have mellowed out a lot. Some still dont, but I have had a lot of them calm down a bit.

Aubrey, how are you doing with the lavender quail and lavender silver quail?
horribly.

didnt get a good start on the quail project, about the time I was ready, they all stopped laying. Got a few lavender girls laying a couple now, been thinking of adding them to them. On the silver ones, I hatched about 8 or so that came out finished, of course I lost them all due to one thing or another. Mainly too many chicks I think. It has been one of those lottery things getting all the genes to hit right on them. I have 2 males and about 8 hens in there for it and get about 1 in 100 or more that hatches right, and it's usually a weak chick with my luck on them.

I am totally redoing my brooding set up for next year though.
Building a group of several 10' x 20' ground pens with hardware or 1 inch wire.
as soon as they are feathering out (at about 4 week old), they'll be going into these pens by breed. plan to do one for all the breeds I have That way I can keep better track of whos still alive and who needs more focus put on them.
even with 8, 3' x 8' foot brooders, they just stayed way too crowded this year and I never realized I was missing something til it was too late to start over.

With this new set up, that will help keep brooders rotated out and no where near as crowed.

Also I now have 3, 25' x 50' grow out pens ready for all the chicks once they get big enough to move out of the starter pens.

Hoping all this will help keep things moving better. plan to hatch about 4000-5000 birds next spring with all this stuff going. Got to finish up with these projects so I can move on to others, as well as free up pens of project birds. I plan to pass them on to others like yourself once I'm done with them so they can continue to help make the new colors. That way it will knock 2-4 years off the project for the new folks that get them if they wish to make some themselves.

I ended up with the one lavender quail pullet and alavender silver quail pullet. There is something about them lavender silver quail, they are the first to die for what ever reason. But any way I have four cockerels out of my silver quail rooster that was split to lavender, so one of the should be split.
They only have one silver gene. I am going to cross the pullets with one of those cockerels and switch the cockerels out untill I see lavender chicks. So hopefully I will get a few of each next year.

NOOOOOO!!! just found my only buff colombian girl dead. She was the sweetest little thing! Looks like she broke her neck somehow while getting off the roost. @#$%%^&&*!!!! wth!!!!!!!!!! I want to make buff columbian ameraucanas and eventually silver columbian ameraucans. In D'anvers have a BBR roo, and incomplete BBR roo, a millie roo and a procelain roo and one millie hen. I have every color of ameraucana hens, wheaten, buff, black, lavender, silver....grrrr so angry right now!

yep I forgot about the splits, I do have 3-4 silver split to lavender, so same thing, they'll be going in with them project males. little easier with them being pullets instead of cockerels. Dont have to worry about which boy to use, I'll just use all the girls and pic out what I need when they hatch.
But yep that color does seem weak so far. The splits and cull colors seem tuff as nails. I can keep all them going, but the silver lavender and the silver duckwing that come from them just seem like runts so far to start with. Hopefully between the two of us, we can get some going good next year. I'll be happy to send you some mates if I do and we can deversify them a little for the following year

man I hate to hear that.
It's not a total lose though. Just breed that good bb male to your mille hen. That equals 100% buff columbian right of the bat.
The males will be about perfect, the hens will have stippled backs a little from the bb red. Just breed them together a time or two and they get cleaner and cleaner each year.

Thank you! I can't tell you how upset I am at losing this little one. Out of all my chickens she was my favorite. She was just the sweetest thing. She'd always come right up to me and start "talking" to me. So sad.... =(
