d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

Quote: Thank you! I am thinking about the d'Anvers' reviews here on BYC - some of them mentioned aggressive roos. So I'm still scouring the thread for more discussion of rooster behavior...I'm finding some mention of roos.

D'Uccle roosters are so sweet (at least mine are) that I am trying to determine if I would like the d'Anvers breed also. D'Anvers are SOOOOO beautiful and come in all sorts of colors, and no feathered feet.

They seem like an "ideal" breed!

Loving everyone's pics on this thread!!!

d'Anver roosters come both ways. Some will never bother you and some live for it. But mostly they are OK. It's not like they weigh 14 pounds. It's kind of funny that they think they are all that.

very true and honestly, they arent much different than any other bantam rooster. Old english and such. you get some pet type and some Rocky fighter type. But all breeds seem to be that way to a degree. Like JJ said, though at 26 onces or so it's not like they are hurting you, but it makes them feel like they are a big shot!!

I've had one D'Uccle rooster. He started showing signs that he might become aggressive, but didn't go that far. After I sold him, he became extremely aggressive. Hatchery stock so what can I say? He wasn't supposed to be like that.

I've had five D'Anver males come to maturity here. One was the worst son of a biscuit eater you could imagine, my Rusty, who was rehomed. His brother loved attention, but would also flog and bite-that was Rufus who lives with a friend in KY and adores him.

One of the porcelains, my Angus who died from an unknown ailment, thought to be heart related, was the only truly non-aggressive d'Anver I've ever owned. Aubrey, my current porcelain, is a pitbull if you bring a camera or phone into the coop or even around his pen. He has become slightly more mellow as he approaches two years old, but a buddy he is not. He usually ignores me, giving me a wide berth in the coop, unless I have the hated camera with me. Then, it's on like donkey kong!

Ace, a cockerel I recently rehomed, was almost sweet, but would do some shoe biting occasionally. I just didn't need him so he went to live with a friend along with a few pullets he was rounding up to be his special young harem. He liked a good chest rub through the fence.

I haven't had them all that long, but I think generally, if you have a non-aggressive D'Anver, he's probably the exception to the rule, but there there are levels to that. None of them are large enough to do any real damage unless they get you in the face when you're bent over or fly off the roost at you.

Thank you for the responses, BackwoodsBntms, BoggyBottomBantams, and SpeckledHen!

It sounds like these guys could be a real possibility for me in the future. Thanks for the information!

I especially love the many varied colors they come in.

The personalities of the roosters do vary. I had one that attacked me any time I wasn't looking. And he was out of a show line. My 8 Roos now are all different. Five will run if you approach them so if I want to pick one of those up or move around to a new pen, I catch them in the evening when they roost. Three are penned with hens now and only one has jumped my hand when I reached in the pen. I have been offering treats like BOSS or cracked corn and he has settled down. They are really entertaining...and are great flyers..reaching the top rafters at a very young age...and the top of the barn too. They run everywhere on those little legs too.

So far, I have only 2, they are really young still so maybe I havent seen them in action, but they basically avoid us. When we go to catch them it is a little chase and catch, once we have them they are really sweet. The boys still live together, the porclain is definitly the top guy. They are breeding the girls, so I thought I would see a change in them. So far, knock on wood, they are really noncomfrontational.

The girls are so sweet. they fly up on us all the time for attention, and talk the whole time. probably fussing at the boys and having to live with 3 noisey guineas and 2 young turkeys.

Thank you NanaKat and KrisH for the responses! Very good to know that their personalities are all over the map.

yep that all sounds about right so far on them. I've got oh 50ish pens of them and only 3 pens are bad. Even they wait til you turn your back though. All the others are fine, or just do the strutting rooster dance when you walk in the pens with them. With a flock of hens is when they seem to be at their worst and all that is , is defending them, which is what you want in a rooster to me at least.

I ahve a few culls that I let run around the yard. They just do their little thing, follow you for food, but never even think of trying you. Now a grown 8 pound rooster, they'll jump on him in a heart beat...

Speaking of that, every d'anver pen I have has multiple males in it too if that ells you anything. They will usually fight the first hour or so when I add a new rooster in the pen, after that, they work in PACKS!! But arent like a lot of breeds where they'd just fight til one didnt get back up.

So all in all, they really arent the monsters they often get made out to be. Even the meanest one is only 25 onces hahaha

now if they were 8 pound large fowl, we might have to rethink things!!!!!
