d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

Well, I guess it doesn't so much matter why as that she is passing it on to her kids and I'm fully aware of it. She's my sweet little pal and there's no reason to remove her from the pen since I'm not actively breeding strictly to standard at the moment. It just seems so odd that some of her chicks would have such prominent feathered legs.

Carly laid an egg today after not producing one for a month. She dug around in the hay in a nest after bullying Mina out of it, then she dug way down until she made a little chicken cave, pulling the hay over her head, and laid an egg in it. Then, when she left, Mina found the egg, thought she'd hit paydirt and started sitting on it. Naturally, I removed it. Mina had been hostile to Molly's first hatched chick before I took Molly and the babies to the broody cage, looking over the divider and screeching like she'd seen some alien invader. First timers, sheesh. You never know how they'll react to a chick the first time they see one.

yep Cynthia,
that is odd, usually if you have one with faint stubble, and bred it to a clean leg you virtually get none then. Not sure why she's passing it on so obviously. Not supposed to work that way. But yes, if you were breeding for top birds, you'd need to cull her. I found the culprit here and had to do that myself. It's in a project pen now.

Chickmama,

that happens from time to time, and for me at least seems to be more so on the lavender color. Something about that gene in a bird, it makes runts seems like. Not sure if there's a genetic reason for it or not, but that's the only color here I've noticed it on

and Lorylin Frams

no but it sure looks like what that combo would be. you've given me a new idea now haha as I now have the cream gene to start working into the d'anvers. But no, that is a very sun bleached washed out blue quail

Aubrey- Do you think they will even out or is the runty one going to probably stay runty? My two year old named the bigger one Bon Jovi...seriously no idea how she came up with that....and the little one Bean. I lost one the other night...one of my bigger 6 week olds. I had them out in the yard and one is just gone. October and November have not been kind to my backyard friends

na this time of year can be ruff on them, especially the younger ones.

No if the runt makes it, it should even out. I tend to loose most of the tiny ones like that seems like. But I deal with tons of them so cant just baby one as bad as it is to say.

But dealing with just a few, it should be fine and with some time should catch up and look totally normal as it matures.

JJ

The reds came in today. They are actually black tailed reds, look to be on a columbian base, which is even better for me. will get ya some pics asap. I'm off next week so can do it then for sure

Mina was obviously sired by either Aubrey or the late Angus because.........

LOOK!!!! It's PORCELAIN!!!!

Aimee is happy to be a mama for the third time this year. The other egg hasn't pipped yet, but today is just Day 19 for that one and Day 20 for the hatched chick.

Molly's two chicksters, one probably Mina's and one definitely Aimee's with Kentucky Leg Fungus:

A Penny pic--she is going for the Santa Claus look this year with her beard color, LOL.
