d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

She has yet to raise a chick, though, Kathryn. Her last egg wasn't even fertile/didn't develop so when I took it from her at about day 12, she just shrugged her feathery shoulders and gave up. That was only about a month ago. She is determined to hatch something. I just hope one of these does it for her. I have a fertility test hatch in the incubator so if one of those doesn't hatch, maybe I can give her one of those to raise; that is, if any of them hatch. Not sure about my 4 yr old Delaware rooster right now, hence the fertility test.

Aubrey! Mina is broody for the third time. I finally gave in and let her have two eggs... LF eggs. They are out of two different EE hens, sired by my Delaware rooster, hence "Delaweggers", if they hatch. Good grief, she's persistent! I swear, these are worse than Silkies!
good Lord, she's bound and determined aint she!! Never seen anything like it in them. Mine will usually try once a year or so, but give up after a week or so without me leaving eggs.... give that girl a fertile egg so she can be a mama!! haha sounds like she wont be happy til then

Mina has her two eggs and is doing fine with them. and now, Aimee, Miss-I-Ain't-Happy-Unless-I-Have-Babies, is thinking about joining her. I just sent DH out to see if Aimee is on the nest tonight. If so, this will be her fourth time broody and she isn't even 2 years old yet. Good grief. Guess it's that time since her last brood of babies is now 14 weeks old.

ETA: Yup, Aimee is broody for the 4th time. Gonna remove an egg or two from the fertility test batch in the bator and give to her, if I can find two that are small enough. Mina is larger than Aimee and these are all large fowl eggs.

Just love the subtle color on the blue silver quail pullet. Cute little things, all of them.

My two broodies are on Day 6 Friday with their LF eggs. They have two each: Mina will have the Delaware x EE chicks and Aimee will have the Delaware x BR chicks, if they are even fertile. Hope to have a couple of youngsters to give to the elderly lady in KY who lost her son of Isaac recently.

Ike isn't a young rooster anymore, so who knows? Will have to candle in a couple of days. They aren't as easy to see into as the D'Anver eggs at the early stages, dang it.

I'm new to this breed of bird and am completely amazed at them, My flock consists of birds under a yr old, we had to break one up from setting all ready and they lay lots of eggs, and surprisingly big eggs for the size hen.
It is still pretty cold here at night and the Serama are not laying and the Silkies are laying sparingly, but the D'Anvers are busy!
I gathered 16 eggs from my favorite roo and his girls and set them in incubator. Not really expecting them to be fertile yet, candled them and ALL are alive and well, and pretty active for being shell bound.
They should hatch the 24th. They are Belgian Quail, I'm anxious!!!!!
I bet they are so darn cute.
I know I want to get some other colors now also. I have another setting of eggs to set this weekend, along with a couple dozen Blue Laced Red Wyandotte eggs.
I have really got the fever!!!!! It's green in Oklahoma, I cut the grass yesterday, 1st time this yr.
Hope all is well with everyone, I love the pictures you all post, helps me decide what color I want to have next.

My D'Anvers lay a decent amount of eggs when they aren't being broody!

Well, my fertility test isn't going so well for my Delaware rooster. Of the dozen eggs I set from several different hens in his flock, most in the bator, four under the two broody d'Anvers, only TWO are definitely developing, from the same EE hen (coincidentally, Isaac's favorite, the head hen, June).

So, my broodies were sitting on duds. I left an egg each underneath them until I can figure what I want to do. June's green eggs are HUGE so I don't know if a D'Anver can sit on even one of those. I don't know if it's Isaac's age, four years old now, or if he's just decided he's tired of the BR hens I'm loading my main flock with, ones he's shown a definite dislike for, even though he does mate them from time to time-I can tell from the feather wear on at least one of them. Decisions, decisions....guess I could get some sexed pullet chicks from the feed store near hatch day for Aimee and Mina to raise, if they have any in the current shipment at the time that I'd even want. That sweet old lady in KY wants desperately to have another son of Ike after losing her beloved Dexter, but unless one of the Delawegger chicks is a cockerel, I won't be able to do that for her. Sigh.
