I said this year I was just going to try and hatch salmon faverole bantams an Mf cochin eggs, but I know I will not be able to pass up danver eggs even if I try. I am a hatchaholic

Poor little Leah, my 15 week old pullet out of Aimee, has some sort of issue in her hip; or, I think it's her hip joint and not inside her body. It's swollen like a golf ball and under the skin is dark purple like bad bruising. Saw her left wing not tucking in right, caught her thinking it was a wing injury and immediately felt a huge hard swelling, obviously extremely painful. Not sure what's going on with her, how she became injured, but she is in the house on soft bedding and has been started on penicillin in case of soft tissue infection (even though, most of the time, that is not strong enough for those type of infections, but it's all I can get without a scrip). She may not make it, but please keep some good thoughts for her. A shame since she is a beautiful pullet, even with her feathered legs.

Later, found one of my 2 year old hens limping in the main flock, but no swelling, so that is probably just a sprain. She is in a cage overnight to rest and stay away from the rooster. Sheesh, when it rains, it pours!

Here is Leah in the rabbit cage. See that bulge underneath the out-of-place feather on her wing? That is not fluff, but an actual humongous bulge at the top of her leg where it connects to her body. Isn't she pretty? I hope we don't lose her over this thing.

dog gone Cyn... your right when it rains...

hate to hear that, she sure is a pretty girl. hope she just got it yanked or something, not broken or anything and will get better for you...

Thanks, Aubrey. She just sits and breathes very rapidly. I don't know what else to do except finish the round of penicillin in case of infection, give a daily baby aspirin for pain and swelling, and keep her away from those rowdy siblings of hers. Nothing much else to do, I guess. Leg injuries can so often turn fatal from infection traveling through the body.

I'm a huge fan of d'Anvers; they are the most adorable chickens! Any tips on getting a hold of a couple young d'Anvers pullets in Northern California? I'm not legally allowed to have roosters in my hometown and it seems impossible to order anything other than straight run d'Anvers from breeders. I'm considering going to local shows looking for young well-socialized hens for sale, but the next one isn't until March and I just don't know if I can WAIT! I'm too excited.

I think there is a breeder in Placerville, CA. Someone on the Yahoo California Chickens site knows this person, so I would post on there. Eventually I will have some. I am waiting for hatching eggs. I love my porcelain pair. They are so tiny and friendly

Good luck finding some

Thanks for the hot tip! I joined the California Chickens Yahoo Group and a post is awaiting moderation! If you ever have too many d'Anver hens let me know! I considered ordering eggs and incubating them...but I don't actually have an incubator or any experience with incubating, so my hatch rate probably wouldn't be that great! That's just how desperate I am to have some d'Anvers!
